From Stories to Costumes: Mabini NHS Marks National Reading Month 2025

Mabini National High School successfully conducted its National Reading Month Celebration with the theme “Reading: A Gateway to Discovery.” The event highlighted the importance of reading as a tool for learning, creativity, and personal growth, engaging students in activities that fostered literacy, imagination, and self-expression.

The program commenced with the National Anthem and Prayer, both presented via AVP, followed by the Opening Remarks of Mrs. Liway U. Cuerdo, OIC, who emphasized the critical role of reading in broadening knowledge and discovering new possibilities. The Presentation of Judges, led by Ken Anrick C. Evangelista (Grade 10), and the Criteria for Judging, presented by Yhannel M. Atienza (Grade 10), set the stage for fair and transparent competitions.

A highlight of the celebration was the Book Character Parade, where students showcased their creativity and school spirit. Learners either wore full book character costumes or, for those without full costumes, wore themed headdresses and carried flaglets representing their assigned characters or literary works.

Best in Costume (Per Section) Winners:
• G7-Sapphire – Male: James Matthew Dona | Female: Akrizia Mae Redor
• G7-Emerald – Male: Teodie Jr. Cabrera | Female: Francheska Aloya
• G8-Beethoven – Male: Rein Yuan Magmanlac | Female: Samantha Luistro
• G8-Mozart – Female: Precious Xyrine Napenas
• G9-Krypton – Female: Princess Deborah Aloya
• G9-Xenon- Female: Anayuki Sam Medina
• G10-Twain – Male: Jack Daniel Cobeta | Female: Jhanea Austine Matira

The Overall Best in Costume awards were given to Jack Daniel Cobeta (Male, G10-Twain) and Jhanea Austine Matira (Female, G10-Twain) for their outstanding portrayal of book characters.

The Storytelling Competition allowed participants to showcase their oral communication and interpretive skills. Winners included:
• 1st Place: Samantha Luistro (G8-Beethoven)
• 2nd Place: Ma. Reesham Victoria Sim (G9-Xenon)
• 3rd Place: Jhanea Austine Matira (G10-Twain)
The Spelling Bee fostered teamwork, quick thinking, and mastery of vocabulary, but with a unique twist. Unlike traditional spelling bees, this year’s contest was conducted using the Wordwall Spelling Bee app, where groups submitted their answers digitally. This modern approach allowed learners to engage interactively and demonstrate their skills in a fun, technology-based format. The winning groups were:

• 1st Place – Group 1: Alkrizia Redor, Dylan Kristoff D. Magmanlac, Zian Lorenzo Elida, Yhannel Atienza
• 2nd Place – Group 2: Jhannelle Bagon, Vincent Dupal-ag, Anayuki Sam Medina, Dylan Trace Matira
• 3rd Place – Group 4: Teodie Jr. Cabrera, Bryle Uriel Solsona, Zyril Villanueva, Ken Anrick Evangelista

In addition, the school implemented two reading-focused activities to further promote literacy. The first, “Basahan Mo Ako” Peer Reading Activity, was held from November 24–28, 2025, where higher-level/ selected students from Grades 8 to 10 read stories to lower-level learners from Grades 7 to 10 in their assigned classrooms during lunch periods. This activity fostered mentorship, enhanced reading fluency, and encouraged peer-to-peer learning. The second activity, the Read-Aloud Showcase, also took place during the same period, allowing learners to present expressive read-alouds from stories, poems, or inspirational texts. Facilitated by English and Filipino teachers during their respective class times, this activity promoted appreciation for literature while helping students develop expressive communication skills.

An intermission number performed by Alexis Medison S. Ilao (Grade 😎 added vibrancy to the program and energized the audience between competitions. The celebration concluded with the Giving of Certificates and Special Awards to recognize the accomplishments of participants, followed by Closing Remarks from Mrs. Anjilyn P. Manongsong, who commended the students, teachers, and organizers for their dedication to promoting literacy. The event was efficiently guided by Masters of Ceremony Dylan Trace P. Matira and Jack Daniel C. Cobeta, ensuring smooth flow of the activities.

Overall, the National Reading Month Celebration 2025 was a meaningful and memorable event that reinforced the importance of reading, creativity, and teamwork among learners. The combination of competitions, the Book Character Parade, and reading activities effectively embodied the theme “Reading: A Gateway to Discovery”, leaving a lasting impact on the school community.

Marilou A. Villaruél.
