MMSU-American Corner Batac MMSU-American Corner Batac It was formally inaugurated on January 14, 1985 with Mr. Herwald H.

The American Corner (known as American Studies Resource Center) at the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) was initially established in 1984. Morton, Director, United States Information Service (USIS) and Counselor of teh Embassy for Public Affairs, as guest of honor. The MMSU-American Corner (AC) is the center for Northern Luzon with 14 other centers located in strategic regions in the country. The MMSU-AC is housed at the first floor, northwestern wing of the MMSU Main Library.

In collaboration with the Junior Marketing Advocates (JMA) of the College of Business, Economics and Accountancy (CBEA), AC Batac brought together students for β€œSustaining Traditions: A Social Media Content Creation Workshop Through Modern Media” on September 24, 2026.

The participants explored the intersection of Ilocano heritage, culture, and modern media, taking on the challenge of creating a one-minute reel based on assigned topics highlighting Ilocano traditions and their influences from the United States.

Through creativity and digital storytelling, the workshop encouraged participants to discover new ways of preserving, celebrating, and sharing cultural traditions in the digital age.

From preserving traditions to creating scroll-worthy stories, the American Corner (AC) Batac, in collaboration with the Junior Marketing Advocates (JMA) of the College of Business, Economics and Accountancy (CBEA), brought culture and creativity together through β€œSustaining Traditions: A Social Media Content Creation Workshop Through Modern Media” on September 24, 2026, at the American Corner.

The activity aimed to develop participants’ skills in using digital tools while encouraging historical exploration in Ilocos Norte, particularly in promoting and documenting the cultural and historical influence of the United States in the province. The workshop featured discussions by Prof. Leslie Kay R. Corpuz, Ms. Jennifer β€œKagagatel” Baniel, and Prof. Melver Ritz L. Gomez, who explored Ilocano heritage, the transformation of local stories into engaging content, and the role of digital storytelling in preserving culture.

The participants then put their learning into action through a one-hour hands-on content creation workshop. The participants were tasked to produce a one-minute reel based on assigned topics about Ilocano heritage and its influences from the United States.

With 244 participants joining in a hybrid setup, the event became a creative space where heritage met modern mediaβ€”encouraging young people to explore history, tell local stories, and use digital platforms to help promote and document the rich cultural heritage of Ilocos Norte. From traditions to reels, every story shared is a step toward keeping history alive.

π—‘π—˜π—ͺ𝗦 𝗕π—₯π—œπ—˜π—™ I AC Batac orients new batch of SAM Volunteers

A new batch of American Corner SAM volunteers was welcomed during their orientation on September 22, 2026. A total of nine volunteers joined the orientation, excited to become part of the American Corner (AC) team and contribute to its programs and activities.

The orientation began with individual self-introductions, followed by an intermission performance by Mr. Jericho Saysi, one of the volunteers.

University Library System (ULS) and American Corner Director Ms. Maria Cristeta R. Llacuna welcomed the student volunteers and encouraged them to make the most of this opportunity to create a meaningful impact in their community. She also introduced them to the American Spaces, its programs and initiatives.

Meanwhile, AC Program Coordinator Ms. Charie Kaye F. Colar discussed the volunteers’ roles, responsibilities, benefits, and expectations. Mr. Piere Jose Pancho, a pioneering volunteer, also shared β€œSAM in Action,” showcasing the events and activities organized by previous volunteers.

The SAM volunteer program remains open to students who are interested in joining the team and contributing to American Corner’s programs and initiatives.

The English Language Society (ELSoc), in collaboration with American Corner Batac, hosted the β€œNow, I Know My A to Z” Vocabulary Quiz Bee on September 29, 2026.

The activity challenged students to put their vocabulary knowledge, teamwork, and quick thinking to the test through a fun and engaging English language learning experience.

American Corner (AC) Batac, in collaboration with the English Language Society (ELSoc) of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), celebrated International Literacy Day (ILD) 2026 on September 29, 2026, through a morning of learning, competition, and creativity held at the American Corner from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

The celebration brought together 55 students from different colleges of the university, who participated in a series of activities designed to showcase and strengthen their language and creative skills, including the A-Z Vocabulary Quiz Bee, Essay Writing Contest, and Digital Poster Writing Contest.

More than a competition, the celebration highlighted literacy as a powerful tool for communication, critical thinking, self-expression, and lifelong learning.

Through words, writing, and creativity, AC Batac and ELSoc continue to provide students with meaningful opportunities to learn, express, and grow.

On September 21, 2026, American Corner Batac hosted a virtual EducationUSA advising session for MMSU students, featuring Ms. Jenna DeDominici as the resource speaker. The event consisted two sessions: an undergraduate session from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and a graduate session from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a total of 30 participants.

EducationUSA is a U.S. Department of State-supported program that partners with American Corners across the country to provide accurate and comprehensive information about studying in the United States. The session aimed to guide students through important considerations when applying to U.S. colleges and universities, including admission requirements and available scholarship opportunities.

On August 26, 2026, the American Corner (AC) Batac introduced eLibraryUSA to 21 third-year Bachelor of Science in Agriculture students through an online resources orientation.

Ms. Charie Kaye F. Colar, AC Batac Librarian In-Charge and Program Coordinator, presented digital platforms available through eLibraryUSA, including JSTOR, Academic Search Premier, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global, Libby by OverDrive, PressReader, BookFlix, and Kanopy.

Ms. Colar emphasized that eLibraryUSA is free and centrally funded by the Office of the American Spaces, providing users with access to scholarly materials, publications, e-books, and multimedia resources to support academic research.

The session encouraged students to register for an individual account and maximize the use of eLibraryUSA as a valuable resource for their research and thesis work.

For the month of August 2026, the staff and faculty in-charge of the reading centers of the College of Business, Economics and Accountancy (CBEA), College of Engineering (COE), College of Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development (CAFSD)–Main, CAFSD–Dingras, College of Information and Computing Sciences (CICS), and Laboratory High School (LHS) were individually oriented on the online resources available through the MMSU University Library System and American Corner (AC) Batac.

The orientation was conducted through visits by college librarians Ms. Arlyn S. Cristobal, Librarian of Serials and Theses/Dissertations and Ms. Charie Kaye F. Colar, AC Librarian and Program Coordinator.

Ms. Cristobal introduced the databases subscribed by the University Library System, including Perlego, Philippine E-Journals (PEJ), Gale Research Complete, and Springer Nature e-books, highlighting their value in supporting teaching, learning, and academic research.

Meanwhile, Ms. Colar presented the eLibraryUSA, featuring digital platforms such as Libby by OverDrive, PressReader, Academic Search Premier, JSTOR, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global, BookFlix, and Kanopy. Ms. Colar also explained that the eLibraryUSA is centrally funded and managed by the Office of the American Spaces and is available free of charge through the AC Batac.

The staff and faculty members were encouraged to register for individual account and encouraged to maximize t he utilization of these resources to support the information and research needs of their students, as well as fellow staff and faculty members.

The initiative strengthens the University Library System’s efforts to equip MMSU reading centers with accessible and reliable resources for teaching, learning, and research.
