The ISBN or the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a unique 10-digit standard number assigned to identify a specific edition of a book or other monographic publication issued by a publisher, under a system recommended for international use by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1969.

An ISBN is essentially a product identifier used by publishers, booksellers, libraries, internet retailers and other supply chain participants for ordering, listing, sales records and stock control purposes. The ISBN identifies the registrant as well as the specific title, edition and format.
