𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝘂𝗹𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𓅯

This August, we celebrate 𝘿𝙪𝙡𝙪𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙣 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝, honoring the 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹 (𝑹𝒉𝒂𝒃𝒅𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒔 𝒘𝒂𝒍𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒊), one of the Philippines' rarest and most threatened birds. Endemic to the islands of 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘀, the Dulungan is easily recognized by its 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹, 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗵-𝗯𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱, 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆, and loud, distinctive calls echoing through the forest. It is classified as 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 due to habitat loss, hunting, and illegal wildlife trade.

Often called the "𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁", the Dulungan plays a vital ecological role as a 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗿. By feeding on fruits and spreading seeds across the forest, it helps regenerate native trees, maintain healthy forests, and support biodiversity. Protecting the Dulungan means protecting the forests that provide clean water, wildlife habitat, and ecosystem services for present and future generations. This August, let us raise awareness and take part in conserving this remarkable symbol of the Western Visayas—𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘶𝘭𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴, 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘰. 💚🌳🦜

𝑨𝒗𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒂 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒂, 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒔. 🌊🌱

Come and take a look at 𝑨𝒗𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒂 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒂! It is a widely distributed mangrove species that plays an essential role in coastal ecosystem. Locally known as "Bungalon-puti" or grey mangrove, it is recognized for its impressive adaptations and resilience, especially its ability to thrive in saline environments.

Beyond the waves, it has several merits including its medicinal value, it provides a safe haven for juvenile marine species and marine biodiversity in general, and it helps filter pollutants from water.

Undeniably, 𝑨. 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒂 is not only a fast regenerating and fast growing species, it is also utilized as insect repellent, source of tannins, and timber—showcasing nature’s ability to protect, provide, and persevere even in challenging environments.

𝑫𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚! 🤿🪸🐟

As part of the field activity under the course of Marine Ecology, the 3rd year Bachelor of Science in Biology major in Ecology students conducted an ocular survey on benthic, nektonic, and coral ecology in Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan to explore the marine biodiversity in small Island. The activity was held on April 30, 2026, (Thursday), from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

As student ecologists, 3-Ecopips didn't just stay inside the classroom to study ecosystems—from terrestrial to vibrant marine life of underwater habitats, they all experienced it in order to enhance their knowledge gained from the class. Beneath the surface, every moment of the dive was a lesson in biodiversity, adaptation, and conservation.

The field activity was conducted with the support and guidance of Mr. Carlo Gregorio, Ms. Elize Margareth Sibulan, and Mr. Daniel Salmorin, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) faculty.

This wasn't just a field activity—it was science in action. Observing, learning, and appreciating the beauty of nature where it thrives most.

We, as future biologists and ecologists, are making waves to protect life on Earth. 🌊🌱

She walked the stage with pride and a dream—to spread her advocacy as an ecology student and to win the crown not just for us, but for the whole eco-community. From answering questions during oral recitations to a stage- frightening q&a which she answered flawlessly that has created an impact and showed no doubt of not winning the crown.

To our precious 𝑬𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂, your eco-peers are so honored as our queen. We witnessed your hard work and effort from the day you accepted the challenge until you were crowned as queen of the wild. You did not just glow— you have shown authenticity and intelligence and that's why you deserve to be crowned as our 𝑸𝒖𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔!

We believed in you and we will always do! Congratulations, Kaykayyyy 🤗💌
