Bamban Chess Academia Learning Center proudly congratulates Paul Terrence Tabago for officially attaining the Arena Grandmaster (AGM) title on August 14, 2026, through the FIDE Online Arena, under the Fรฉdรฉration Internationale des รchecs (FIDE), the International Chess Federation.
This achievement carries a special meaning for us.
Long before the establishment of Bamban Chess Academia Learning Center, Paul was the first student of AFM Genesis Gifford Labrador. At the beginning of that journey, Paul was playing at approximately the 1900 rating level. Today, he has developed into a 2500+ online player, with the 2600 threshold now within reach.
His journey did not happen overnight.
Paul has consistently represented Tarlac Province in CLRAA, while also becoming a Tarlac State University (TSU) student-athlete, representing the university in the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA). Along the way, he has been mentored and continues to be guided by accomplished chess coaches from Tarlac State University, as well as other chess masters who have contributed significantly to his development.
And ever since Paul crossed the 2300 rating threshold, he became increasingly difficult to stop.
The progress that followed was the product of continuous training, competition, mentorship, self-discipline, and the willingness to learn from stronger players. Each mentor added something to his development. Each coach contributed knowledge and experience. Each competitive opportunity became another step toward mastery.
Paul's story demonstrates an important reality in chess:
You do not reach your highest potential alone.
Talent matters. Hard work matters. Discipline matters. But having mentors who genuinely teach, coaches who provide real value, and people who are willing to invest their knowledge and experience into your development can fundamentally change the trajectory of a player's career.
A coach's role should never be reduced to simply collecting a fee. The real value of coaching is in the knowledge transferred, the weaknesses identified, the habits corrected, the confidence developed, and the standards established.
When a student is surrounded by mentors who genuinely want to see that student improve, the student can eventually prosper, grow, and create a legacy of their own.
And that is where the ripple effect of mentorship becomes powerful.
A coach teaches a student.
The student becomes stronger.
The stronger player inspires another.
Eventually, the knowledge that was once passed down becomes knowledge that is passed forward.
That is how legacies are built in chess.
From a player around 1900 rating to a 2500+ online player and now an Arena Grandmaster, Paul's journey represents not only personal achievement, but also the cumulative impact of every mentor, coach, teammate, opponent, and training experience that contributed to his growth.
From being the first student of AFM Genesis Gifford Labrador to becoming an Arena Grandmaster, this is a milestone worth recognizing.

The title has been earned.
The 2600 threshold awaits.
And the legacy is only beginning.
