A CAMERA CAN RECORD A CRIME. GOOD SECURITY DESIGN CAN HELP PREVENT ONE.

Security is often associated with guards, CCTV cameras, alarms, fences, and access-control systems. But effective security can begin even before those measures are deployed. It can begin with the environment itself.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) looks at how the design, use, and management of spaces can influence visibility, access, behavior, ownership, and opportunities for crime.

A poorly lighted parking area. A blind corner. An uncontrolled entrance. Overgrown landscaping that blocks visibility. A space that looks neglected and unmanaged. These may appear to be ordinary design issues—but from a security perspective, they can also become vulnerabilities.

CPTED encourages us to ask better questions: Can people see what is happening around them? Can access be guided and controlled naturally? Does the space communicate ownership and responsibility? Is the environment maintained in a way that supports safety?
