REGULAR HOLIDAY

Celebrated on November 30th in the Philippines, Bonifacio Day is a national holiday that celebrates the birthday of Andres Bonifacio.

Bonifacio was a Filipino nationalist and revolutionary and is considered a national hero. He is often called 'the Father of the Philippine Revolution'.

In 1892, Bonifacio was a founder of a secret society called the "Kataas-taasang, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan" (commonly known as "Katipunan") that grew into an armed movement that instigated attacks on the Spanish colonial rulers. Bonifacio became the commander in chief of the revolutionary army of the Katipunan.

The leadership of the Katipunan became fractured and rival factions vied for control. Emilio Aguinaldo eventually took control of the forces.

At a meeting known as the Tejeros convention, a vote was taken to decide who would be president after the overthrow of the Spanish. Aguinaldo won, with Bonifacio coming second. Bonifacio rejected the result saying the voting had been rigged and became a rebel leader within a revolutionary government.

This led to his arrest by Aguinaldo, his trial and subsequent ex*****on on May 10th 1897.

As the Katipunan had it's own constitution and was in control of the Philippines before the creation of the first government, many have argued that Bonifacio should be remembered as the first president of the Philippines and not Aguinaldo.

Bonifacio is remembered on his birthday, rather than the date of his death (as in the case of the main national hero, Jose Rizal) as he was executed by the Filipino revolutionary government and not by the Spanish.

Severe tropical storm Ulysses gained more strength as it continued its approach towards the Philippines and is expected to develop into a typhoon in 12 to 24 hours, state weather bureau PAGASA said early Wednesday.

In its 5:00 AM bulletin, PAGASA said Ulysses was last spotted 180 km northeast of Virac, Catanduanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 100 kph near the center and 125 kph gusts while moving westward at 15 kph.

Ulysses, which is expected to become a typhoon, will reach peak intensity of 130-155 kph before landfall, the weather bureau said. It is likely to weaken when it crosses the Sierra Madre mountain range but it's expected to remain a typhoon while traversing the Luzon landmass, said PAGASA.

We are now under Signal No. 2 together with other central and southern portions of Aurora.

Tropical Storm Tonyo is now outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility. However, Typhoon Tonyo is forecast to still bring bring moderate to heavy rains over the region, hence the weather that we are experiencing now.

Potential super typhoon Rolly (with international name Goni) maintains its strength as it moves west-southwestward towards Bicol region, state weather bureau PAGASA announced in its 11:00 AM bulletin on Saturday, October 31, 2020.

'Goni' has transformed from an ordinary Pacific cyclone into 2020's strongest storm on Earth, reports said. It is likely to cause a major disaster.

PAGASA said 'Bagyong Rolly' is likely to remain a typhoon category (185-205 km/h) by the time it grazes Bicol Region and makes landfall over Quezon. During its traverse over Luzon, it is forecast to weaken considerably and emerge as a severe tropical storm or minimal typhoon over the West Philippine Sea.

Aurora is under Signal No. 1 as of 11:00 AM today.

Typhoon Quinta has made its fifth landfall, this time, over Oriental Mindoro as it maintained its typhoon category.

In its 5:00 AM. update, weather bureau PAGASA said Quinta made landfall over Pola, Oriental Mindoro at 3:30 AM, its expected final coastal crossing over the country's landmass.

We are currently under Signal No. 1, together with other southern portions of Aurora.

Weather system "Pepito" intensified into a tropical storm this morning, prompting the weather bureau to place more areas under warning signals.

The country's 16th storm this year was last estimated 195 kilometers east of Baler, Aurora as of 1:00 PM, moving west northwest at 25 kms per hour towards the Aurora-Isabela area, where it is forecast to hit land this evening, PAGASA said in its latest weather bulletin.

Pepito, which is packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph and gusts of up to 80 kph, is expected to intensify into a severe tropical storm and leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Thursday, PAGASA added.

We are now under Signal No. 2.

Held annually on 5 October since 1994, World Teachers’ Day commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This Recommendation sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions. The Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel was adopted in 1997 to complement the 1966 Recommendation by covering teaching and research personnel in higher education.

This 2020, World Teachers’ Day will celebrate teachers with the theme “Teachers: Leading in Crisis, Reimagining the Future”. The day provides the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, take stock of achievements, and draw attention to the voices of teachers, who are at the heart of efforts to attain the global education target of leaving no one behind.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly added to the challenges faced by already over-extended education systems throughout the world. It is no exaggeration to say that the world is at a crossroads and, now more than ever, we must work with teachers to protect the right to education and guide it into the unfolding landscape brought about by the pandemic.

The issue of teacher leadership in relation to crisis responses is not just timely, but critical in terms of the contributions teachers have made to provide remote learning, support vulnerable populations, re-open schools, and ensure that learning gaps have been mitigated. The discussions surrounding WTD will also address the role of teachers in building resilience and shaping the future of education and the teaching profession.

A joint statement from Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, Guy Ryder, Director-General, International Labour Organization, Henrietta H. Fore, Executive Director, UNICEF, David Edwards, General Secretary, Education International on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day 2020 goes like this, "In this crisis, teachers have shown, as they have done so often, great leadership and innovation in ensuring that , that no learner is left behind. Around the world, they have worked individually and collectively to find solutions and create new learning environments for their students to allow education to continue. Their role advising on school reopening plans and supporting students with the return to school is just as important.”

National Heroes Day commemorates the Cry of Pugad Lawin, a revolt that kicked off the 1896 Philippine Revolution against the Spanish Empire and the long struggle toward that country’s independence. After centuries of rule by Spain, the United States, and Japan, the Philippines finally achieved full independence at the end of World War II. This victory ended a protracted conflict that pitted the small island nation against major world powers.

National Heroes Day reminds us that freedom comes at the cost of others’ sacrifices. For the Philippines, the long, painful road to independence is paved with the losses of many historic heroes.

This year, we salute not just our national heroes, but also our frontline modern-day heroes for the sacrifices they are making to make our nation and our world a safer place to live in.

SPECIAL NON-WORKING HOLIDAY

This national non-working holiday is celebrated annually on August 21st. In Filipino, it is known as Araw ng Kabayanihan ni Ninoy Aquino. The holiday commemorates the assassination of former Senator Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino, Jr. on this day in 1983.

The holiday first celebrated in 2004 after the Republic Act 9256. The holiday was included as part of President Gloria Arroyo's program of holiday economics, which adjusted the date of public holidays so that they would be taken on the nearest Monday to boost the tourism industry with long weekends. It was moved back to its original date by President Benigno 'Noynoy' Aquino III (Aquino's son) in 2010.

Did you know that the scene of his death, Manila International Airport, has since been renamed Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in his honor?

LOCAL HOLIDAY (SPECIAL NON-WORKING HOLIDAY)

Every 19th of August, Balerianos celebrate the town fiesta and commemorate the birth anniversary of President Manuel L. Quezon. It is usually a week-long celebration; streets filled with masterful decorations, different activities and events being held every day, and happy faces filling the atmosphere.

This year, as we face a trying time, the celebration will not be as it was before. We, as a nation, have been hit hard by the pandemic and there is no certainty as to when this will end. But, Balerianos know how to keep their spirits up even on the most difficult situation. We may not have a grand celebration this year, but the spirit of unity that continuously lives among us is worth celebrating enough. This anniversary is an opportune time to celebrate our colorful heritage, to remember what makes us strong, and to recall the history of our municipality that makes us proud as ever. May we live on with what our beloved President Manuel L. Quezon once said, "I want our people to be like a molave tree, strong and resilient, standing on the hillsides, unafraid of the rising tide, lighting and the storm, confident of its strength."
