FUN FACT EPISODE NO. 1

THE TRUE BERRIES

Blackberry. Blueberry. Cranberry. Dewberry. Elderberry. Mulberry. Raspberry. Strawberry.

If I ask you what's common among these fruits, surely you would say, "They are all berries." It would make sense because all of them end with the word BERRY. But blackberry, mulberry, raspberry, and strawberry are not true berries; although, they end with the word berry.

According to Jernstedt, a fruit can be considered a berry if it has the following characteristics.

One. It must have three distinct fleshy layers: exocarp (outer skin), mesocarp (fleshy middle), and endocarp (innermost part which holds the seeds).

Two. It must have two or more seeds.

Three. It must develop from a flower that has one o***y.

Taking into consideration these three characteristics, the following fruits qualify as berries.

Bananas. Eggplants. Grapes. Kiwis. Oranges. Peppers. Tomatoes. Watermelons.

See? They may not end with the word berry, but botanically speaking, they are true berries!
