The stigma towards menโs mental health has withstand the test of time with the social, political, and cultural system that has built a patriarchal society. We must also acknowledge that ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป ๐ฑ๐ผ ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ and it is time to break the system that forces them to the toxic idea of manning up.
There are two types of stigmas that men experience: Social and self-stigma. ๐ฆ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐๐ถ๐ด๐บ๐ฎ reflects beliefs and behaviors that are reinforced by common beliefs. โReal men donโt cry.โ โMen cannot show any type of emotion because it shows weakness.โ Those are some social stigmas that affect how men handle their feelings for fear of being labelled as soft. Meanwhile, ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ณ-๐๐๐ถ๐ด๐บ๐ฎ is the inner dialogue that says, "I don't deserve to feel better" or "I can get by alone" and holding on to these stigma's chips away at your mental health over time.
Tackling both stigmas is a hard but necessary challenge that men need to understand. However, it takes a collective effort from individuals, communities, and institutions. Nevertheless, we can focus on small actions, such as these:
1. Talk about mental health
Expressing your genuine concern for another manโs well-being should not be seen as shameful. Let them know that you're there to listen and support them.
2. Get in your feelings
Pay attention to how different situations or experiences make you feel and try to articulate those emotions.
3. Redefining what makes a Man
Before your gender, you are first and foremost a human with feelings. Your definition of masculinity can be anything that you want it to be to break toxic stereotypes.
4. Normalize help-seeking behavior
It is okay to seek help. It shows strength and courage when you prioritize your mental health.
By acknowledging the unique challenges faced by male-identifying individuals and promoting a culture that embraces emotional vulnerability, we can create a society where men feel empowered to prioritize their mental well-being.
