There are no words to express the sorrow for the loss of one of the best teachers, mentors, and leaders of STI College Balagtas, Sir Reymond G. Tugadi.

Sir Tugs, you have touched many people's lives at such a young age, including ours. We are deeply saddened to hear that we have lost you. However, we take comfort in knowing that you are now with the Lord — our loss is heaven's gain. Your Banyuhay family will never forget how you supported and guided us throughout our campus journalism and senior high school journeys. And for that, we are forever grateful.

May your soul rest in eternal peace.

BEYOND STANDARDS

Having both beauty and intelligence is a rare circumstance but is the ideal picture of being “crush ng bayan” that everyone desires.

Today, it is all about the quality of being attractive and pleasing. Numerous studies have consistently shown that attractive people get more favorable treatment in many situations than those who have ordinary faces. They are more accepted in their peer groups, they receive better treatment in stores and restaurants, and they are hired more often with higher salary. In terms of having crush, are these things that make up outer beauty more important than inner beauty? STIers will prove something different to us, they will show to us how amazing the inner beauty that can make an average looking person light up a room with their heart-stopping presence. In STI College Balagtas, we look for stunning persons that portray beautiful souls behind their bare faces.

We chose two beautiful personalities who will teach us that being an ideal “crush ng bayan” should be determined by purpose rather than by mere appearance. They proudly say that being the “Crush ng bayan” is more than just a term, “It’s a representation for people who have never felt seen and represented, to leave a message that we can be whoever we want to be regardless of our size, sexual and gender identity and skin complexion because we are all valid” (Esguerra, 2021). Being true to themselves is what makes the attractive and beautiful. “I am just being myself, because showing your true colors is what makes you confident. It is more captivating when a person has a combination of good qualities” (Dave, 2021). To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is such a bravery, so do not let social norms defined your own definition of beauty and always remember that labels are only for products, only you can define yourself.

Sam fearlessly admitted that being a transgender person living in a world where people are afraid to be themselves, she wants to be part of change to end that stigma and be the light for those people, to celebrate our uniqueness and beauty of diversity and to cultivate a community that promotes inclusivity. Her greatest achievement in life is when she finally gained the courage to show the world what she is capable of. And that is the bravest thing that she ever did to her life.

On the other corner, Patrick represents those students who are busy with mining their gold and gems in life while ignoring pressures in life, because his mission is to take every day one step at a time without worrying the future. His mindset is his asset because he always wants to acquire different learnings and knowledge every single day.

A beauty without purpose is useless. Let us keep in our minds and hearts that being handsome, attractive and beautiful is not all about making someone`s day lovely. It should be making a meaningful difference in someone else’s life. Doing things for others without expectation of personal gain, serving as exemplary role models, and gaining as much satisfaction witnessing the success of others as witnessing their own. As the old proverb says, “A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.”

Who Let the Kids Out?

Have you heard? Have you heard the news, the news that has made every part of our country buzz with excitement and happiness? What such news could have made everyone feel these kinds of emotions in the middle of a global pandemic? Oh, that’s right! Children are now allowed to go outside and feel like once again. Isn’t it exciting news?

On the last week of October up to this date, news that over thirty (30) million Filipinos are now vaccinated—and not just citizens who are eighteen (18) and above. Studies showed that children can now get vaccinated and finally go out once again just like before the pandemic started. Over 30 million people in our country are now fully vaccinated. People had started to go on with their normal lives and even children are out going trips to malls and parks. With the help of vaccines and their boosters, Filipinos may now experience what life was back when the COVID-19 pandemic hit us.

News on social media are lighting everyone’s feed with their family photos and trips to somewhere with their kids tagging along. Although, children are now allowed to go outside, proper sanitation and protection must be always in mind. Let the children experience the joys of being outside while also remembering how to be safe and away from the virus. The adults already know the drill. It is now the time to teach their children ways on how they can shield themselves from the dangerous virus. Let the kids have fun and enjoy their childhood while also looking out for them. They are happiness in a human body, adults must keep their happiness safe and protected—especially from viruses. So, who let the kids out? Well, the sheer joy and idea of having to finally experience their childhood did let them out, being safe and protected, of course.

Woman of All Colors

As KC Montero shouts “Cebu City,” a new queen is crowned. Our new Miss Universe Philippines is Cebu City’s representative, Beatrice Luigi Gomez.

Beatrice Luigi Gomez is a 26 years-old brave, confident, and phenomenal lady from Cebu City, Philippines. She is a Philippine Navy Marines Reservist, and a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ Community; she identifies herself as a Bisexual. She is an advocate for the LGBTQIA+ and Women’s rights, and she is the first ever homosexual Miss Universe Philippines. Bea is not new in the world of pageantry, she became 2nd Runner-Up in the Miss Mandaue Competition last 2015, and in January 2020, she became Binibining Cebu and was crowned by Steffi Rose Aberasturi, who she ended up competing against in this year Miss Universe Philippines Pageant.

During the question-and-answer portion, she was asked: “If during your reign as Miss Universe Philippines, things happen in your life that make you sad and uninspired, how would you be able to continue inspiring others?” She replied: “It is very evident that all of us went through difficulties during this pandemic, but it is also proof that we are able to rise to the occasion, and if anything happened to me during my reign, I will not give up and inspire others by rising to the problems that I am encountering and by inspiring them that what you are going through, you will be able to overcome it.” With that answer, she created impact to the judges and audiences which paved the way for her being crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2021. Truly, Ms. Beatrice is a queen in every way possible.

Beatrice is really an inspiring queen, she uses her voice and her platform to fight for others no matter what skin color, gender or sexuality, nationality, and age we have. She is indeed the “Woman of All Colors.”

The idea of what is considered to be "Crush ng Bayan" has been conditioned into the human psyche but still differs from person to person. It is a subjective concept but in STI COLLEGE BALAGTAS, it comes in many forms as it is a broad concept. The time has come to reveal the beautiful souls of STIers.
Let us look forward to seeing the potential of these individuals that reflects from within.

UNDAS SA PANAHON NG PANDEMYA

Alam ninyo ba na ang UNDAS ay galing sa salitang termino na Día de Todos Los Santos o Araw ng mga santo (All Saints Day naman sa salitang Ingles) na ang ibig sabihin ay "Honrar" na nangangahulugang "to honor" na sa tagalog naman ay "parangalan". Ito ay dahil sa pinararangalan natin ang ating mga mahal sa buhay na yumao na o sumakabilang buhay na. Ang undas ay isang tradisyong Pinoy na itinatapat sa unang araw ng ikalabing-isang buwan ng taon o tuwing ika-isa ng Nobyembre.

Minsan sa isang taon ay naglalaan tayo ng isang araw upang alalahanin natin ang ating mga namayapang kamag-anak, kaibigan, dating g**o, kakilala, mga artista, o maging mga pulitikong tao bukod sa araw na sila'y namatay. Sa araw na ito, ginugugol natin ang ating oras para mabigyan sila ng bulaklak, mapagtirikan ng kandila, at maalayan ng kanta at dasal. Hindi man natin sila kasama nang pisikal ay pwede pa rin nating maipakita ang ating pag-alala. Dito ka lang makakakita sa Pilipinas ng pagdagsa ng libo-libong mga tao sa mga estasyon ng bus at mga lokal na paliparan para bumiyahe papunta sa kani-kanilang probinsiya upang bisitahin sa puntod ang mga mahal nila sa buhay na yumao na. Ang undas rin ang dahilan kung bakit ang mga pamilyang pinaglayo-layo ng propesyon at estado ay nagkakabuklod. Tila nagiging isang mini-reunion din ang undas para sa ilang pamilya. Isa kasi ang araw na ito kung saan libre ang lahat.

Ngunit sa pagdating ng hindi inaasahang sakuna na nangyari sa pagsisimula ng taong 2020, tila saglit na nahinto ang tradisyon na nakasanayan natin. Sa pagpapatupad ng limitadong lugar, oras, at pagkakataon. Paano pa nga ba natin magugunita ang araw ng pag-alala natin sa ating mga mahal sa buhay?

Kung dati-rati ay inaabot na ng milyon-milyon ang mga tao na dumaragsa sa mga sementeryo upang dumalaw sa mga mahal nila sa buhay, ngayon ay iba na. Naging limitado na ang bilang ng mga tao na pumapasok sa sementeryo dahil sa paghihigpit at takot na baka lalong kumalat ang COVID-19. Limitado na rin ang oras ng pamamalagi sa loob ng mga sementeryo na dati ay inaabot pa ng hanggang kinabukasan sa pamamalagi. Ang iba ay mas pinipili na lang na magtulos ng kandila sa labas ng kani-kanilang mga bahay at mag-aalay ng dasal sa mga mahal nila sa buhay.

Bukod sa limitadong tao, limitadong oras, at limitadong araw ay naging limitado na rin ang benta ng mga kababayan natin na tindero at tindera. Umaaray na rin ang iba sa kanila dahil sa matumal na benta ng kandila at bulaklak.

Ang nakasanayan natin na tradisyonal na undas noon ay tila unti-unti nang nawawala dahil sa nararanasan natin na pandemya ngayon. Nakaka-miss ang dating nakasanayan, 'di ba? Ang mga ingay sa kabi-kabilang musileyo, mga magpipinsan na sa araw lang ng mga patay nagkakaroon ng oras para magkasama, mga pamilya na nag-aakay ng dasal at awit, ang sabay-sabay na pagkain ng magkakamag-anak, na pinagbuklod ng Todo Los Santos Isang beses lang sa isang taon ngunit tila natuldukan pa ng panahon.

Sa kabilang banda, nawa ay magkaroon pa rin tayo ng pagninilay kahit na sa ating mga tahanan lamang upang maipaabot pa rin natin ang ating pagmamahal sa mga taong gumagabay sa atin na mapayapa nang nanunuod mula sa itaas.
