Children today are not really lacking in comprehension.
What they often lack is the willingness to slow down, focus, and truly read with intention.
Here’s a simple example:
“The teacher teaches every day.”
True or false?
Some students still get it wrong, not because they are incapable, not because they don’t understand the words, but because they didn’t actually process what they read.
But the moment the teacher reads it aloud and explains it verbally?
Almost everyone answers correctly.
Yet when the instruction becomes:
“Read silently, understand, and answer independently,”
suddenly many responses are incorrect.
So what changed?
Nothing about their ability changed.
Only their effort did.
Many students rush. They skim. They guess. They look for shortcuts. They treat reading like a race instead of a thinking task. Minsan bara-bara na lang ang sagot. The goal becomes “finish fast,” not “understand deeply.”
They don’t pause to analyze the sentence. They don’t picture the situation. They don’t ask themselves, “What is this really saying?”
And this is the uncomfortable reality inside many classrooms.
When this pattern keeps repeating, teachers sometimes raise their voices. Not out of hatred. Not because they enjoy scolding. But because they care. Because they want students to engage their minds. Gusto lang nilang mag-isip ang bata. Gusto nilang mag-effort.
It’s frustration mixed with concern.
But here’s the bigger question we don’t always ask:
Is it fair to blame only the teacher?
Maybe the challenge is larger than teacher versus student.
We are raising children in a world of fast scrolling, instant notifications, short clips, and one-click answers. Everything is quick, bite-sized, and effortless. Attention spans are shrinking. Patience is becoming rare.
Reading, on the other hand, demands stillness. It requires concentration, imagination, and mental stamina. It asks the brain to slow down and work.
And discipline like that doesn’t grow overnight. It must be practiced and trained.
To parents:
Create spaces at home where focus is possible. Reduce gadgets sometimes. Encourage book time. Ask your child questions after reading a story. Let them explain in their own words. Turuan silang hindi minamadali ang pagkatuto. Help them see that learning is not a race.
To teachers:
Keep guiding with patience. Correct with compassion. Don’t just teach answers, teach thinking. Show them how to break down questions, how to underline key details, how to reflect before responding. Model the process, not just the result.
To students:
“Okay na ’to” is not enough. Push yourself. Read twice if needed. Think harder. Effort matters more than speed. Understanding is more powerful than guessing.
Because comprehension isn’t only about IQ or talent.
It’s about attention.
It’s about discipline.
It’s about mindset.
And the good news?
Those are skills anyone can build.
If families support, teachers guide, and students cooperate, improvement will happen. Little by little. Day by day.
Hindi kulang ang kakayahan ng mga bata.
Kulang lang minsan sa tiyaga at pokus.
And those can always be strengthened, if we choose to work together.
