DON'T FIND YOUR PASSION, DOESN'T WORK

You have been told by some teachers and speakers that if you want to succeed in life, you have to find your passion.

According to them, your passion is that thing you can do for free, without even getting paid.

But they ignore the fact that, to succeed, you may need back breaking hardwork.

You will get tired sometimes.

You may want to give up sometimes.

Your passion is not the way to success.

A lot of young men are very passionate about football, but how many of them are succeeding through football? Very few.

When you find your passion, and you try to sell your passion, you will most likely end up realising that you are the only one passionate about your passion.

The people you are trying to sell to are real human beings, with their own needs and wants, who do not care about how passionate you are with what you do.

Rather, find your purpose instead.

It is your purpose that will sell.

What is a purpose in this case?

Your purpose is that thing you can do to positively impact the lives of others.

So while your passion focuses on you, your purpose focuses on others.

If the focus of your production is on you, then you are the only one who will love and buy what you produce.

A good case study of this fact is a car produced in the 1950s, called the Ford Edsel.

You see, the staff members of Ford corporation wanted to produce a supercar.

They loved the idea, the concept design and everything about the car.

They named the car, Edsel.

If you are intelligent, you will google about the Ford Edsel after reading this post.

So they were able to come up with a good design for it.

In fact, during the design period, they closed up the studio from the mass media so that nobody will be able to copy the Edsel design.

After everything was done, the Edsel was produced.

The result?

No sales.

Why was that?

Because even though the Ford members of staff and management were passionate about the car, the members of the public were not interested.

That is because, when you get passionate about something, you are passionate because it serves your interest.

But when you find a purpose, that purpose serves peoples interests. And people are going to buy into things that serve their interests far more than they will buy into things that serve your interest.

So pursue purpose rather than passion.

Two things happened last week that made me pause and reflect on life and our humanity.

In Paris, LeBron James was voted the Olympic basketball MVP. Almost concurrently, British singer Adele announced her engagement to Rich Paul.

What a coincidence!

Rich Paul used to sell T-shirts in parking lots. That he is now engaged to one of the greatest musicians of our generation is a rare occurrence. It took LeBron James to help make Rich Paul who he is today.

In 2002, when Paul was 21 years old, he met LeBron, who was still in high school, at the airport in their hometown of Akron. Paul was trying to get his throwback jersey business off the ground when he ran into LeBron.

James, captivated by Paul’s Warren Moon throwback jersey, asked where he got it. It turned out that Paul was selling jerseys from the trunk of his car and was going to Atlanta to buy more. He gave James his connection in Atlanta and told him to drop his name for a discount, then went on his way.

A friendship was born.

After LeBron was picked No. 1 overall in the 2003 NBA Draft, he hired Paul as a personal assistant on a $50,000 annual salary.

Paul had no college degree or managerial experience. He had enrolled at the University of Akron but transferred to Cleveland State when his father was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. He dropped out of college a few months after his father's death.

Over the years, Paul was determined to learn more about the sports business. According to Sports Illustrated, he began working under Leon Rose at Creative Artists Agency. During his time there, he made powerful connections and developed lasting relationships that eventually helped him start his own agency, Klutch Sports Group, in 2012.

In an interview with The New York Times, Paul said:

“I didn’t just want to be a member of LeBron’s entourage: LeBron had no obligation to me. I was not entitled to anything. I wanted to be valuable.”

In 2014, Paul negotiated a deal for LeBron James to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, which was one of the biggest sports stories of the year.

Today, Klutch Sports is arguably the most successful sports agency representing some of the NBA’s biggest names. In 2021, it was estimated that the guy who used to sell jerseys from the trunk of his car was worth $200 million.

Speaking to ESPN about how his relationship with Paul developed, James said:

“I just felt like Rich was someone I wanted to grow with. He’d always kept it real with me, and I wanted him to be part of my team.”

LeBron James saw something in Rich Paul that most others did not.

Rich Paul started at the bottom. Now Paul is rich.

The story isn’t always about where you start. Where you are going matters more.

Be the ladder that others use to climb to the skies of success.

When Allyson Felix became pregnant, Nike was prepared to cut the terms of Felix's endorsement by as much as 70% due to the pregnancy, and told her to “know your place and just run.” 🤯

Amid all of this, she was forced to have an emergency c-section seven months into her pregnancy because of a potentially life-threatening condition and her baby had to live for more than a month in the NICU. But two years later she’s qualified for her fifth Olympics with her daughter watching.

With 11 medals now, she passed Carl Lewis this summer for the most track and field medals by an American in history!
