THE NEO-LIBERAL ATTACKS ON EDUCATION
" (Adapted from: ucuscsrw.notes)
The education system in the Philippines is still on the struggle of breaking the chains for attaining its independence against the claws of greed that created the continuous cause of student sufferings. It is already in the system and is hard to counter due to wide acceptance of the academic institutions, the state, and even the branches of the society.
In its very core, our institutions are bound to the concepts of neo-liberalism, and now even the field of education is conquered.
We have the three kinds of education infested by neo-liberalism, we have: COLONIAL EDUCATION, COMMERCIALIZED EDUCATION, and FASCIST EDUCATION. Now to further more understand its concepts, let us discuss them one by one, citing the situations of our institutions.
First and foremost, we need to understand that it is COLONIAL, yes, the Americans and other races are one of the contributors of our educational system, but the problem is we are taking and implementing education in favor of their needs and standards, and not the needs of our own country. Indeed, we are forced to attend school just for the sake of others. This is an example of student and human rights exploitation, because due to the influence of other countries(larger states) we are to attend with their needs without knowing the needs of our own land. The government of the Philippines must know how to break the stigma, and start a move to discover how our own education works for our own. An example of this is the K-12 program that was introduced to our country in aid of integration, we are suffering because we are in a hard surface in dealing with whats in. Now, we can feel its consequences and complications against the students.
Another kind of Neo-liberal attack on education is the COMMERCIALIZATION of education. Education must be made accessible to all students. Yes there are scholarships and state Universities, but the Private HEIs are larger in number, and they take this opportunity to create profits out of the desire to learn and to be educated. The rampant case of tuition increases, dubious, exorbitant and redundant fees are becoming common. The education now is becoming a trade element and business. To understand the following fees, we need to discuss them;
Dubious Fees refers to the fees that we are paying out of ignorance, it is a fees of doubt that we are not even sure of its purpose.
Redundant Fees refers to fees that are repeating in its common purpose but is being distributed to deceive people in the cause of its collection, basically we the students are its milking cows. Example is the presence of both medical and health fees in the breakdown of fees or athletics and sports fees.
Exorbitant Fees refers to fees that are questionable due to its high value, the price or fee is too high without any reasonable cause.
These are the THREE kinds of fees, silently killing majority of students and preventing them from achieving their goals. Another is the CARRY OVER SCHEME, the COS is a smart and deceiving technique to collect treasures. It is the increase of fees by level but not by the same level. Example, if a freshmen started from 2010 has a tuition of 1000, then he will end up until graduation paying the same amount. But the next batch, starting from 2011 will now pay a higher amount so on and so forth with the other batches.Higher and higher. Abusive.
Now let us move to FASCIST EDUCATION, it is where the suppression of students is being manifested. Strict rules and policies, control and dictatorship is present. Sometimes even the freedom of expression is being prevented. Some schools tend to abolish student councils, organizations and Student publications that might expose and fight them. These are the clear reasons of the presence of educational fascism, the rights of the students are being strangled.
These are the reasons why our student leaders and progressive actions exist. This is the birth of activism that shall be observe to fight for our rights us the students, we are the main stakeholders of these institution. Likewise, to the student councils, they should not function as bridge between students and admins, they shall be bias on the sides of the students and serve as their shield."
