The BA English Language (BAEL) program convened students across all year levels and faculty members at the Smart AVR in the UB Gym Building on August 17, 2026, for its annual course orientation, formally opening the new academic year with guidance, reminders, and inspiration.
Hosted by Mr. Vincent Sito and Ms. Angelika Espayos, the orientation commenced with warm welcoming remarks from Ms. Nicole Anne Carmen, adviser of the Shakespearean Society. Following this, Ms. Hazel Joy Tawas and Mr. Rainer Orosco introduced the esteemed faculty members who will guide students throughout their academic journey.
The highlights of the presentations included, the "Policies, Standards, and Guidelines (PSG)" presented by Dr. Maria Virginia Kitan, covering the BAEL curriculum. Dr. Stacy Haynie Ayson then introduced the internship program, outlining a wide range of career opportunities. To keep students on track, Mr. Brent Gorio explained the grading system, while Dr. Michelle Ranges presented the EXCEL series, shared accomplishment reports, and provided important updates regarding the latest program implementations.
Additionally, Ms. Jalilah Pansar, one of the creatives of the Shakespearean Society, presented an accomplishment report highlighting the organization's recent achievements. The orientation concluded with inspirational recorded video messages from BAEL alumni: Dr. Mannilyn Ranges Cacanindin (Batch 2009), Atty. Dyna Chen Amy Diwan (Batch 2013), Ms. Joy Anne Ganer (Batch 2017), and Mr. Charls Matthew De Perio (Batch 2025). Their heartfelt words served as encouragement and living testimony that "In BAEL, We Excel" across diverse career paths. Miss Kyla Portin and Amor Cayasen who are currently in Nagasaki Wesleyan University in Japan for the Cultural Exchange Program and Mr. Lee Ian Veneracion who had the opportunity to have a cultural / Immersion in the College of Asian Scholars in Khon Kaen, Thailand, also shared their insights and experiences of the opportunities and challenges they have experienced while in the Student Mobility Programs.
Afterward, the Shakespearean Society held its officer elections for Academic Year 2026โ2027, facilitated by Ms. Nicole Anne Carmen and Mr. Gabriel Guzman.
The annual orientation reflected the University of Baguioโs commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4 (Quality Education): Ensuring students are empowered to achieve excellence through lifelong learning. SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth): Equipping students with high-value skills for broad career paths across education, corporate, media, and public sectors.
Finally, SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): Building strong collaborative networks among students, faculty, and local and global alumni to achieve an inclusive future.
Beyond academic guidelines, the orientation highlighted the insightful and fun interaction of all year level students and strengthened the bonds within the BAEL community. Supported by dedicated mentors and inspiring alumni, the community continues to embody our motto: "In BAEL, We Excelโ in both academic and professional careers.

๐ฃUB ANNOUNCEMENT: HIGHER EDUCATION CLASS OPENING ARRANGEMENTS FOR AUGUST 10 TO 14, 2026๐ฃ
In view of the continuing heavy Habagat (southwest monsoon) rains, localized landslide risks, and hazardous travel conditions along major access roads to Baguio City, the University of Baguio will implement a Flexible Online Learning Arrangement for the first week of classes, August 10โ14, 2026.๐ฉ๏ธ
The said arrangement shall adhere to the University's Ease-Into-Learning Protocol, allowing classes and course activities to start while providing faculty and students with time to safely adjust to the new academic term.
FOR STUDENTS

๐ธ Prioritize your safety
Do not travel if weather or road conditions are hazardous. Students coming from areas affected by severe weather are advised to remain at home and participate online when possible.
๐ธ Stay informed through student portals and official class group chats
Log in to your Student Portal and join the official Group Chats established by your instructors or program.
๐ธ Complete your student course onboarding
Download your course syllabi, check your course requirements, and participate in your instructorsโ course orientations.
๐ธ No academic penalties for weather-related disruptions
Students will not be penalized or marked absent when power outages, internet interruptions, or travel disruptions caused by the weather prevent them from participating in scheduled online sessions.
๐ธ Communicate and stay up-to-date with your instructors
Inform your Instructor, Program Chair, or Dean as soon as power and internet connectivity become available.
FOR FACULTY MEMBERS

๐ธ Excercise work and duties remotely when conditions permit
Faculty members may work remotely if they have reliable internet connectivity and can effectively perform their assigned teaching and related duties online.
**Faculty members may only report to the university when travel and campus reporting are allowed and safe under the current circumstances if internet connectivity is not available. Faculty members may switch to preparing coursework and other suitable academic tasks that can be done offline when physically reporting to campus is impractical or forbidden due to weather and safety concerns.
**Students must be informed of these arrangements in a clear and concise manner via the channels of communication that are available.
๐ธ Activate course communication channels
Make course rooms active and establish official class Group Chats and LMS course shells as soon as possible.
๐ธ Focus on orientation and onboarding
During the first week, prioritize course orientations, syllabus walkthroughs, course expectations, and student onboarding.
๐ธ Observe the Ease-Into-Learning Protocol
No graded assessments, strict submission deadlines, or high-stakes quizzes shall be required during Week 1.
๐ธ Provide flexible alternatives
Provide asynchronous learning options for students affected by power, connectivity, or travel disruptions, in accordance with Administrative Memorandum No. 010, s. 2026.
๐ธ Exercise compassion and flexibility
Faculty members are expected to exercise maximum consideration and leniency regarding student connectivity, attendance, and participation during this period.

๐ธ The Deanโs Office shall oversee the implementation of faculty work arrangements during the week.
๐ธ Deans shall ensure that faculty members establish primary communication channels with their respective classes and implement an appropriate monitoring system to regularly check the status and work arrangements of faculty members.
Students and faculty are urged to stay in touch with their deans, program chairs, and instructors in order to stay safe and connected. They should also keep an eye on the University of Baguio's official channels and social media accounts for prevalent updates or announcements.โ๐ซ
