International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025

Indigenous persons with disabilities, including Indigenous women with disabilities, are vital members of our global community, yet they continue to face intersecting forms of discrimination and marginalization.

To ensure they are not left behind, it is essential to effectively implement relevant international human rights law including the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and General Recommendation No. 39 on the rights of Indigenous women and girls, adopted by the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.

An estimated 1.3 billion people live with a significant disability today.

No one understands the needs of persons with disabilities better than they do themselves. To achieve a more inclusive and accessible world, people with disabilities must have a seat at decision-making tables.

🌎Today, the General Assembly adopted the historic resolution by recorded vote, proclaiming 5 September of each year as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls!

The resolution recognized that 5 September is already commemorated in several countries as the International Day of Indigenous Women, in honour of Indigenous women leaders who have dedicated their lives to the resistance and struggles for the rights of Indigenous Peoples, to promote awareness of the rights of all Indigenous women and girls, to uphold their memory, justice, reparation and dignity.

The resolution, amongst other things:

👉Recognizes the significant contribution of Indigenous women and girls to sustainable development, the protection of the environment, the preservation of Indigenous languages and cultures, intergenerational transmission of knowledge, maternal health and the promotion of Indigenous and traditional medicine;

👉Notes the CEDAW General Recommendation 39 on the rights of Indigenous Women and Girls;

👉Stresses the importance of the empowerment of Indigenous women and girls, their full, equal and meaningful participation in decision-making and with their free, prior and informed consent; and

👉Requests the Secretary-General to bring the present resolution to the attention of all, in order to raise awareness of the need to recognize and respect the rights and fundamental freedoms of all Indigenous women and girls, as set out in the

#Watch | Guardians of the Climate: The Global Study on Indigenous Peoples’ Climate Contributions and Trends in Access to Climate Finance On 14 November 2025 at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, the Elatia network and Indigenous Livelihoods Enhancement Partners - ILEPA hosted a launch for a new study report, in partnership with UN High-level Climate Champion Razan Al Mubarak and with support from the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund. The study is a response to the recognition that while Indigenous Peoples’ leadership on climate and nature is apparent across the globe, that forests managed by Indigenous Peoples have deforestation rates significantly lower—up to 50% less—than those in other areas, and that Indigenous Peoples are custodians of 25% of the world's land areas - climate finance and other forms of resource and technical assistance often fails to reach the Indigenous Peoples.
