๐ฃ Dr. Robert Munson, PBTS professor of missions, presented his paper on April 11, 2026, at the Evangelical Missiological Society (EMS) โ Southeast Region, held at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. The title of his paper is โHoly Defect: Metaphors and the Quest for the Perfectly Flawed Missionary.โ
The theme for this yearโs conference is โTheological Anthropology in Mission.โ
_____________
ABSTRACT: Ideal missionaries are best understood not in terms of perfection---power, giftedness, or flawlessness. Rather, their recognized flaws and weaknesses may be what best mark their effectiveness in ministry. Such โflawednessโ in this paper is not primarily moral in nature, although it can include moral failings, but rather the failure to meet human-created standards of perfection. The flaws of ministers and mankind as a whole will be explored in a, perhaps paradoxically, positive fashion. This perspective will be supported, in part, through exploring metaphors---from both the Bible and pastoral theology. Metaphors explored include Wounded Healer, Circus Clown, Wise Fool, Thorn in the Flesh,Penitent Publican, and Jars of Clay. All of these suggest a positive role for flaws or perceived weaknesses in ministry and the Christian life. It is hoped that an exploration of these metaphors will help those in cross-cultural ministry be more effective in their work. In part, effectiveness may come through the missionary giving him/herself grace in areas identified as falling short of perfection.Additionally, he or she may recognize that flaws could actually help the missionary bridge the cultural and ministerial gap with the respondent.

๐ฃ Faculty member Fritz Melodi, ThD, has published an article in the Scopus-indexed International Journal of Practical Theology (De Gruyter Brill, 2026).
Title: "Trauma, Theology, and ๐๐ข๐จ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ข๐ฏ: Discerning a Practical Theology of Liturgical Care among Filipino Christians" https://doi.org/10.1515/ijpt-2025-0016
_____________
ABSTRACT
This paper aims to look at Filipino lived experience of trauma within the liturgical space and a pastoral theology that may emerge from it. Using practical theological methodology, this study is an interdisciplinary excursion into lived experience, trauma, and liturgical theology. This paper argues that performative, symbolic, and aesthetic experiences in the liturgy have therapeutic potential in activating meaning-making among people who have experienced trauma. Interfacing these analyses with Filipino thought and Christian tradition, it can be articulated that the experience of the beautiful mediated through physical symbols and the aesthetic, particularly in worship, is a potent vehicle for Godโs transformative action.
