Fear, pain, and determination filled Barangay Ucab, Itogon, Benguet as 72 residents underwent circumcision during a medical mission conducted by the College of Nursing and School of MidwiferyโStudent Government Organization (CONSOM-SGO) on May 12.
Out of 86 registered participants, several withdrew midway after reportedly experiencing anxiety and fear upon witnessing the procedure, while others pushed through despite visible discomfort.
Scenes during the operation reflected mixed reactions among patients. Some were seen crying and expressing intense discomfort, while volunteers attended to challenges in handling participants who became increasingly anxious. In contrast, others remained composed as procedures were carried out.
The medical mission was made possible through the Liga ng mga Barangay Itogon Chapter in partnership headed by Captain Edwin Atompag and Maโam Jessica Medino in partnership with Itogon Suyoc Resources Inc. (ISRI) and the Municipal Health Office (MHO) headed by Dr. Oliver Guadana.
The activity carried the theme โFree Community Circumcision 2026: Working Together for a Healthier Tomorrow.โ
SGO officers joined the mission led by Governor Angelica Samson, together with Laidy Pedro, Ezzle Lyn Bentres, Hans Joel Tan, Aljune Bantiyao, Alexander Lavarias, and Reynald Pablo.
Level II-D students composed of Timoteo Abalos, Rochelle Joyce Mang-osan, Jesann Chara Palonan, Errone Samidan, Lea Sinak-ey, Jammela Sumacyab, and Jojo Suyat assisted during the activity under the supervision of clinical instructors Eduardo Lofsted and Emerson Soriano, along with SGO Adviser Allan Guinanghan.
Volunteer medical support was also provided by Sir Cyril Pacis, a registered nurse and also a BCU alumna, alongside intern doctors who assisted in the procedures and healthcare delivery.
Sir Allan Guinanghan, SGO Adviser, said: โNi Jessica ken ni Cyrill dyy batch da actually iti nag start ti kakastoy nga medical mission ket isu met ti itultuloy da. Isunga dakayon to no agrun kayo iti SGO, ituloy u met dyty narugian da.โ
The medical mission is formed as part of the continuing community outreach efforts, bringing healthcare services closer to residents of Itogon through collaboration among nursing students, alumni, medical professionals, and supportive barangay officials.
Further outreach activities are scheduled on May 14, 2026 in Virac, Itogon, and May 18, 2026 in Loakan, Itogon, as part of continuing public health initiatives.
