After revealing the first two batches of SOSYUS entries this week, the UPB Sociology Guild is dropping the final batch today, you won’t want to miss these.

Due to several problems encountered this enrollment period, we are giving the spotlight to one of our entries today.

The salt air and the rust on our doors reminded us of everything we need and more.

I am among the few students who got lucky during the enrollment process. I was refreshing the AMIS portal every thirty seconds in an attempt to outdo everyone else trying to get their units. And this was coming from a senior who already has less competitors than juniors and sophomores. One minute before 8 AM, the portal opened. I won the unit game.

Look at the words I used: “lucky”, “outdo”, “competitors”. It’s no wonder enrollment season is being likened to the Hunger Games. Students are ready to do whatever it takes. The question is: why?

I know a lot of my friends and peers who weren’t so lucky. Who, despite classes starting tomorrow, are still underloaded and more importantly undersupported. I know graduating students who worry that the courses they were unable to take this semester won’t be offered in the succeeding term, effectively prolonging their stay in the university than it needs to be.

To many students, this causes prolonged uncertainty. They worry constantly. They question their future. These are not experiences we can just set aside with remarks like “ganito talaga rito eh”. Comments like these only uphold the status quo and they are used to justify hardship.

In Sociology, learners are always engaged in systems thinking: reasons go beyond the individual, social structures guide how people act, and these structures are always unequal. But, recognizing inequalities in the system doesn’t mean letting it persist because we think it is beyond control.

Like any human-made thing or concept, a system is also made by the people. And anything made by the people can be changed. We can make things better: when perfect is impossible, we must always be in the pursuit of betterment.

Efforts have been made by students. They opened and submitted petitions. They spammed the refresh button. They desperately waited for a closed section to open again. They sent as many TPs (teacher’s prerogative) they could. I know a friend who gave up her slot in order for another friend to be on regular load.

Students play by the rule book. They have always heeded the prerogative of others. The question now is: when will the prerogative of students get to be accommodated? Not listened to, not noted by, but actioned on.

We are still in need of more. More:

1. Sections
2. Faculty
3. Better Spaces

We are in need of a better system.

Of course, this isn’t meant to single out any one department or any one faculty member. We have to remember that a system is always interconnected. With every worried student and hardworking student leader is also an overworked faculty member and a tired admin staff.

When we are all but exhausted, my hope is for us to come together once more.

My hope is change. For all of us.

That means more funding, improved processes, and the recognition that a ‘working’ system isn’t always good.

We cannot enjoy a university when one social butterfly is allowed to fly and many others are left struggling to take flight or worse not allowed to fly at all. Our social butterflies deserve to fly in better air. Afflictions must have no space in the university.

When the salt air dissipates, I hope those that are not ours today, come our way soon.

Handog ang pangako ng sariling determinasyon, awtonomiya, at lupa’t kabuhayan, noong Hulyo 15, 1987, nilagdaan ng noo’y Pangulong Corazon Aquino ang Executive Order No. 220, o ang kautusang bumuo sa ngayo’y tinatawag na Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). Itinadhana ng EO na ito ang pagkakabuo ng isang administratibong rehiyon para sa mga katutubong naninirahan sa Kordilyera — ang kasalukuyang mga lalawigan ng Abra, Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mt. Province, at Benguet. Sampung buwan naman bago nito, noong Setyembre 1986, nakipagtagpo ang kampo ni Padre Conrado Balweg, lider ng huwad na armadong pakikibaka para sa awtonomiya mula sa Abra, sa administrasyong Aquino. Dito nailatag ang isang “kasunduang pangkapayapaan” na nagbigay-daan sa pagtatalaga ng “awtonomiya” sa Kordilyera. Tunay naman ito sa diwa ng Saligang Batas ng 1987 — binanggit sa Section 15, Article X ang isang legal na balangkas para sa awtonomiyang panrehiyon. Subalit isang katanungan ang patuloy na nananaig sa mga kabundukan: “𝗧𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗴𝗮 𝗯𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘄𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗸𝗼 𝘀𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗸𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗴 𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗔𝗥?”

Nakaukit na sa kasaysayan ng Kordilyera ang diwa ng mga naninirahan dito bilang mga taong hindi basta-bastang nagpapatinag sa sindak ng dominanteng sistema. Kayang tumindig at lumaban para sa lupa, buhay, at karapatan — ito ang ipinamalas ng mga katutubong lider kagaya na lamang ni Macli-ing Dulag, isang pangat o katutubong pinunong pinaslang noong panahon ng diktaduryang Marcos. Emblematiko at siyang tunay na kapuri-puri ang dangal ng kanilang mga ipinaglaban; subalit, ang nakakalungkot, ang mga kondisyong kanilang binuwisan ng buhay upang kawalan ay sumasalamin pa rin sa kalagayan ng kasalukuyan. Kahindik-hindik na paglabag ng mga karapatang pantao, patuloy na pagbulusok sa kahirapan dahil sa kapabayaan ng pamahalaan, at institusyonal na karahasan mula sa pasistang militar ay ilan lamang sa mga isyung kinahaharap ng mga taga-Kordilyera.

Kung kaya siyang tunay namang nakapagtataka kung nasaan na ang salitang “administratibo” sa Cordillera Administrative Region. Bagaman may mga mekanismong nailatag para sa representasyon ng mga sektor ng rehiyon sa mga unang taon ng CAR, unti-unti ring naglaho ang mga ito na parang bula. Ang mas nakakabalintuna pa rito ay ang kawalan ng sapat na suporta ng nasyonal na pamahalaan sa rehiyon, gaya na lamang ng kalidad na mga serbisyo at pagpopondo. 𝗞𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗴𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗸𝗼 𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗮, 𝗮𝘄𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘆𝗮, 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝘂𝗽𝗮’𝘁 𝗸𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗵𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻, 𝗻𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝗶𝘁𝗼?

Sa pagsaliksik at paglubog natin sa tunay na kondisyon ng Kordilyera, maaaninag natin ang mga pangakong napako mula sa pagkasilang pa lamang ng Cordillera Administrative Region. Kung kaya, 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗴𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗮 𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗦𝗦 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗦𝗦 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 (𝗖𝗦𝗦 𝗕𝗢𝗔𝗢) 𝗻𝗮 𝗵𝘂𝘄𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗸𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘄𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘆𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗱 𝘀𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝗔𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻. Ito ay isang malaking insulto at panlilinlang sa tunay na karanasan ng mga katutubong taga-Kordilyera, ang karanasan ng pagdurusa at panlalamang sa kanila ng kasalukuyang sistema. Sa loob ng tatlumpu’t siyam na taon ng pagkakatatag ng CAR, ang mga kampanya para sa lupa, buhay, at karapatan ay patuloy na nananatiling mailap sa pagkapanalo — sa halip, ang kalagayan ng mga katutubo ay mas lalo pang lumubog.

Nakakalungkot isipin na ang kayamanan ng Kordilyera mula sa luntian nitong mga bulubundukin hanggang sa mapagbigkis nitong kultura ay hindi naipagtatanggol nang tunay at maayos. Mahaba na ang panahon at kasaysayang tiniis ng ating mga katutubo para sa pangangalaga ng kanilang pamayanan, pagkakakilanlan, at kabuhayan. Hindi ba’t panahon na rin upang bigyan sila nang buhay na karapat-dapat nilang matamasa? 𝗔𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗵𝗼𝘆 𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗦𝗦 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗦𝗦 𝗕𝗢𝗔𝗢 — 𝗸𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗮 𝗸𝗮𝗺𝗶 𝘀𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘆 𝗻𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗴𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝘀𝗮 𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗮 𝗮𝘄𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘆𝗮 𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗹𝘆𝗲𝗿𝗮.

𝗧𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗴𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗸𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗮 𝗞𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗹𝘆𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝗻𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗸𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝘀𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘆 𝗻𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝘀𝗮 𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗮 𝗮𝘄𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘆𝗮 𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗶𝘆𝗼𝗻. Sa pamamagitan ng pag-alam sa sentimyento, kolaborasyon, at pakikipag-usap sa mismong mga katutubo, nalalaman natin ang tunay nilang mga pangangailangan na malulutas nang maigi sa ilalim ng ganap na awtonomiya. Bowing out this academic year, the UPB Sociology Guild is proud to take you all back in our milestones and wins through this accomplishment post.

Remember the good times: how we took this organization with us to new heights. From our bridgerton and barney themed mass orientations, our pop-up booths, and the legacy that is SocioTalks: we made our public events more persuasive than ever.

Yearlong, we have released multiple statements tackling pressing issues. We celebrated our academic achievers and our student speakers. We celebrated our birthdays. We integrated Sociology in Superman, in tarot cards, and in having a crush. The guild was visible, present, and bolder.

Calling for a more visible Sociology in the campus meant also caring for all the social butterflies in the guild. We had our food-packed general assemblies, our anniversary night and team building, and the very necessary revision of our constitution and by-laws.

Ending this academic year with a recollection of our accomplishments is more than listing what happened throughout the year. Let this trip down memory lane inspire a stronger Sociology Guild when the campus calls back for more.

Recounting the last semester would have you imagine blank stares and deep sighs. And yet, like you always do, you find ways to pull through.

Your hard work has paid off and the UPB Sociology Guild couldn’t be more happy with this accomplishment! Whether in list or in resolutely finishing the semester, we have all made it out in the best way possible: as achievers! 🎉

The UPB Sociology Guild 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐌𝐍𝐒 𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐑𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐀𝐆𝐆𝐈𝐍𝐆.

There is danger in failing to see how we all connect to each other. In Sociology, those trained with basic sociological concepts will be well aware of the sociological imagination: to locate our own stories in broader narratives. In any form of red tagging— the malicious labelling of individuals as state enemies, imposed through harassment, threats, or worse, violence and death— the sociological imagination is lost.

Red tagging is used to ultimately suppress criticism. Inherently it divides societies in two sides, simplified between the “doers of good” and the “wrongdoers”. It imagines a society that can exist without fault. Such a faultless society cannot exist in reality. On the ground, it creates a dangerous illusion that those “unaffected” by state oppression will remain untouched if they maintain their good graces.

In truth, and using the sociological imagination, the fight of peasant communities and the fight of activists are equally the fight of any other Filipino. It is a fight for fairness. When farmers, for example, are continuing to be marginalized— the common Filipino suffers from food insecurity and higher food prices.

At its best, the sociological imagination transcends this realization. At its peak, this imagination creates a shared heart. It’s why activists continue to fight in places they don’t necessarily live in everyday. At its heart, the sociological imagination allows us to cry together, to stand together— to fight together. To this end, we must realize: all of us are connected; we are never isolated from the struggles of each other.

Let us uphold togetherness: imagine the world together, fight for change together.
