Coffee and conversation for the next generation! ❤️

: A common lament nowadays is that young people don’t want to go into agriculture because there is no money in it. Daniel Jason “Kumafor” Maches and Ricky Lacbongan, both 24, from Barlig, Mountain Province are out to prove both sentiments wrong.

Maches and Lacbongan, both of the I-Lias tribe, started a coffee farm on their respective ancestral lands during the pandemic.

When Mario Joey Tacan was 13, he watched his relatives plant coffee seedlings in the rich soil of the Mount Matutum Protected Landscape. At the time, the crop meant little to him.

Decades later, while studying as a seminarian in Cebu in 2000, Tacan learned that most coffee in the Philippines was imported. The realization planted a seed: carefully nurtured coffee could transform a community. In 2001, he returned to Polomolok, South Cotabato, to develop his father’s farm.

Today, the 53-year-old Tacan is a multi-award-winning grower leading a coffee renaissance in South Cotabato. Following his recent sixth-place finish in the 2026 Philippine national round of the Southeast Asian Green Coffee Competition, Tacan is using his platform to advocate for quality coffee, mentor local farmers, and help bridge a massive supply gap in a country that imports nearly 378,000 metric tons of coffee annually.

MANILA — A Philippine agricultural startup is deploying artificial intelligence to help small farmers eliminate costly soil guesswork and reduce production expenses.

GreenVisions Ph, led by founder Lorilyn Pablo Daquioag, has introduced a portable, AI-powered farm management system that delivers field-level soil diagnostics in under 10 minutes.

Filipino farmers often spend up to 65% of their income on production inputs, including fertilizer, pesticides, and labor, according to Daquioag.

However, GreenVisions Ph data indicates that 95% of assessed farms suffer from excessive fertilizer application, while only 0.05% of local farmers perform regular soil testing.

The handheld device uses integrated sensors to measure nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, pH, moisture, and temperature. Operating without internet connectivity, it calibrates data using Bureau of Soils and Water Management standards to generate precise, crop-specific guidance on fertilizer volume and timing.

In one pilot test in Davao, soil readings showed adequate existing nutrient levels, allowing a farmer to delay fertilizer purchases by two months and halve expected seasonal expenses.

Beyond hardware, the startup incorporates microbial solutions like Trichoderma to enhance plant nutrient absorption and disease resilience.

During a yearlong pilot program, the combination of AI diagnostics and biological solutions cut fertilizer use by at least 30%, the company reported.

The venture received commercialization support from the Department of Science and Technology–Technology Application and Promotion Institute through its Expanded Venture Financing Program. DOST-TAPI also funded the company’s expansion into international markets, including its showcase at GITEX AI Asia.

Daquioag said the goal is to build localized soil standards tailored to Philippine agricultural conditions rather than relying on generalized farming models.

"Before creating technology, we must first understand the problem," Daquioag said. "Before scaling innovation, we must ensure that it is useful, usable, and within reach."
