Teenage Soundtrack: Lifelong Musical Fondness

"Open-earedness" is defined as a person's ability and desire to listen to and accept different sounds and music styles. According to research, adolescents are the most "open-eared," willing to appreciate many different musical genres. But, this alters with age, and eventually, the musical tastes people develop as teenagers become their musical tastes for the rest of their lives.

According to an analysis of data from the music app Spotify, the most played songs are from listeners' teen years. YouGov survey data shows the same bias is consistent across all generations. Young teens cannot drive, vote, or drink, but apparently, they can determine lifelong musical prejudices. Almost everyone believes the music from their youth was the best.

Survey research from the European streaming service Deezer suggests that music discovery peaks at age 24. Listeners at that age have a lot of variety in their music. The Deezer study indicates that 31 is the age musical tastes begin to stagnate.

Data from a 2014 Spotify study mostly agrees. This study explored how tastes in music deviate from the mainstream with age. The survey identifies age 33 as the turning point where artistic taste hardens and increasingly deviates from contemporary music. The survey also suggests a parental bias. Parents' tastes vary more from the current mainstream than do those of their childless peers.

This is a sad blow for adults who want to think they are up-to-date in their musical tastes. We all seem condemned to listen to the songs of our youth forever.

Understanding Anger's Impact on Heart Health

A study in the Journal of the American Heart Association has found that feeling anger after remembering past experiences may negatively affect the blood vessels' ability to relax. Previous research has found this may increase the risk of conditions that lead to heart disease.

In the study, 280 adults were given one of four tasks. These were recalling a memory that made them angry, recalling a memory of anxiety, reading sentences that made them sad, or counting to 100 to feel neutral.

Researchers checked the lining of their blood vessels at the start and three minutes, 40 minutes, 70 minutes, and 100 minutes after the task.

The tasks that caused anger negatively affected blood vessel dilation up to 40 minutes later. The blood vessels were not affected by the tasks that caused anxiety or sadness.

Lead study author Daichi Shimbo said, "Evoking an angered state led to blood vessel dysfunction." However, the researchers do not yet know what causes this.

Dr. Shimbo added that more research could help find ways to treat people who are at increased risk of heart attacks.

A 2021 statement from the American Heart Association said that mental well-being can affect our physical health, including the risk factors for heart disease.

Being Overweight Reduces Death From Frailty

Research has found that being obese may reduce death from frailty in elderly people. These findings were announced by scientists from various places across Japan. These included Waseda and Kyoto Universities.

Daiki Watanabe, from Waseda University, explained that being very thin can stop elderly people from living long lives. However, he also said, "It is true at the same time that being fatter does not necessarily ensure a longer life."

Frailty refers to an intermediate stage between health and illness. Healthcare experts take it seriously.

The research team examined 10,912 people aged 65 and over. A total of 4,763 were identified as having frailty. This was based on a checklist developed by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

The findings showed that those who had a lower Body Mass Index, or BMI, were more likely to pass away sooner. Regardless, anyone who had frailty was more likely to die compared with their healthy peers.

Watanabe said it was important for frailty to be staved off for as long as possible. Elderly people should eat a good diet, engage in daily exercise, and socialize with others.
