Covenant City Church Baguio Joins Hands with JSNHS to Empower Parents at SPTA Assembly

Joaquin Smith National High School held its 2nd General SPTA Assembly today, September 18, at the JSNHS Open Court, bringing together parents, teachers, and school officials under the theme "Strengthening Home-School Partnership for Safe and Responsible Learner."

The assembly opened with registration, a prayer, and the singing of the national anthem, followed by welcome remarks and updates from the school head on key department orders covering safe learning environments, learning continuity, and the revised grading and assessment policy. The SPTA President also presented Project KAAGAPAY and the association's proposed priority projects, while the SPTA Treasurer gave a financial report.

Following the general program, the assembly moved into a classroom-based activity, where each section hosted its own parenting talk led by an assigned speaker from Grade 7 to Grade 12. The speakers were volunteers from Covenant City Church Baguio, led by Pastor Ricardo Bagalawis, who partnered with the school to guide parents through practical strategies for raising children in today's environment. Topics covered included healing unresolved issues within the family, protecting children from harm, avoiding harsh discipline, staying involved in children's friendships, and expressing love and encouragement more openly at home.

The talks encouraged parents to see themselves as active partners in their children's development — strengthening their marriages, modeling healthy communication, and creating homes where children feel safe and supported. Discussions were framed around building patience and positive discipline rather than punitive approaches, in line with the assembly's broader goal of equipping parents with effective, practical parenting tools.

The day's activities concluded with a parenting talk delivered by Covenant City Church Baguio volunteer members, after which classroom advisers discussed the revised grading and assessment policy before distributing report cards to parents. Covenant City Church Baguio also extended an invitation to parents seeking further prayer and counseling support beyond the assembly.

School Conducts Successful Earthquake Drill

The school held its earthquake drill today at exactly 9:00 AM, testing the preparedness of students, faculty, and staff in the event of a real seismic emergency.

At the sound of the alarm, students and teachers immediately proceeded to follow the "duck, cover, and hold" protocol before evacuating their classrooms in an orderly manner. Guided by the teachers and the members of the various committees assigned to the activity, everyone made their way to the designated evacuation area within minutes.

School Principal Janet B. Pascua commended everyone involved in the drill's success. In her remarks, she praised the students for their discipline and cooperation, the teachers for their guidance throughout the activity, and the different committees for their thorough planning and coordination that ensured the drill ran smoothly and safely.

Principal Pascua emphasized the importance of regular earthquake drills in building a culture of safety and preparedness within the school community. She reminded everyone that such activities are not mere formalities but vital exercises that could save lives in the event of an actual earthquake.

The drill forms part of the school's ongoing disaster preparedness program, which aims to equip students and personnel with the knowledge and reflexes needed to respond calmly and effectively during emergencies.

With the success of today's activity, school officials expressed confidence that the students and staff are better prepared to face potential natural calamities in the future.

Bullying has no place in schools or in communities. Every learner has the fundamental right to study, learn, and grow in an environment free from fear, harassment, mistreatment and bullying.

Under the Department of Education (DepEd) Order No. 006, s. 2026 (Guidelines on Ensuring a Safe and Motivating Learning Environment), DepEd strengthen its commitment to preventing and addressing all forms of bullying.

Stopping bullying requires action from all of us. Thus, everyone is encouraged to recognize the different forms of bullying, how to report bullying incidents, the level of disciplinary intervention that may apply, and the importance of confidentiality in handling reported cases.

Together, let us help build a learning environment where every learner feels safe, heard, respected and protected.

Breaking the Silence: Why Every Student Deserves to Feel Safe

Recent reports of bullying among students in Baguio City have stirred concern across the local school community, reminding everyone that behind every headline is a young person who deserved to feel safe, and didn't.

Bullying rarely stays contained to a single moment. It lingers — in a student's hesitation to speak up in class, in the friend group they've quietly withdrawn from, in the confidence that slowly erodes over weeks or months before anyone notices. Whether it takes the form of physical aggression, cruel words, exclusion, or harassment carried out online, the damage it leaves behind is real, and it does not disappear once the incident itself is over.

What recent events across the city have made clear is this: bullying is not a "kids being kids" issue to shrug off. It is a serious matter that affects a student's mental health, academic performance, and sense of belonging — sometimes for years afterward.

At Joaquin Smith National High School, this is a message the administration wants every learner to hear clearly: bullying is not tolerated, and it is not allowed, in any form, for any reason.
JSNHS stands firmly behind its Child Protection Policy, which exists precisely to ensure that every student, regardless of background, appearance, personality, or circumstance, can walk through the school gates without fear. This is not simply a rule on paper. It is a commitment the school actively reinforces through orientation, classroom discussions, and the guidance of teachers and staff who are trained to recognize and respond to bullying when it happens.

If you are experiencing bullying, or have witnessed it happen to someone else, JSNHS wants you to know you are not alone, and you do not have to handle it in silence. Students are encouraged to reach out through any of the following:

Your class adviser or subject teacher: often the first and most immediate person a student can approach
The Guidance Office: trained to handle bullying reports with confidentiality and care
The school's Child Protection Committee: mandated to investigate and act on bullying reports under DepEd policy
The Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG): peer leaders who can help a fellow student find the right adult to talk to
Our Principal, Janet B. Pascua: the school's doors are always open for students who need to speak with her directly about their concerns
A trusted parent or guardian, who can formally raise concerns with the school administration

No report is too small, and no student should feel that speaking up will make things worse. Every concern raised is taken seriously.

JSNHS Teachers and Staff Join “YOUmustahan” Season 5, Breaking Free from ‘The Comparison Trap"

Teachers, staff, and personnel of JSNHS gathered in the school library on August 26, 2026 for a lunchtime session of YOUmustahan Season Five, a devotional program presented by Grove in partnership with Project SEED. The gathering combined a shared meal with a short teaching and small-group discussion time.

The session continued the ongoing series with a message titled The Comparison Trap, addressing the tendency to measure self-worth by looking “to the left and to the right” — comparing careers, appearance, possessions, children, and achievements to those of neighbors, siblings, and colleagues.
Drawing on the wisdom of King Solomon, the speaker noted that comparing one’s life to others is like “chasing after the wind” — something even one of history’s wealthiest and most accomplished figures found ultimately unsatisfying, since looks, titles, and possessions are temporary.

The talk turned to Galatians 4:4-5, explaining that just as the price someone is willing to pay determines an item’s true value, it is God who has already determined the worth of every person — a worth demonstrated through the sending of His Son to bring redemption and adoption into His family.

The speaker illustrated the concept of adoption with a historical example: Roman emperors typically adopted grown adults who had already proven themselves, unlike God’s adoption of people, which comes with full knowledge of their future failures and shortcomings. A personal story about affirming a family member’s sense of being loved reinforced the point that identity and value are meant to be received, not earned through comparison.

YOUmustahan is an ongoing devotional series brought to JSNHS through Grove and Project SEED, aimed at encouraging participants to grow in their faith. Organizers noted that the next session will continue in the second term, wrapping up the current teaching series.

JSNHS Celebrates Nutrition Month with Healthy Food Sharing Activities

Joaquin Smith National High School capped off this year's Nutrition Month celebration with a series of activities that put healthy eating into practice, as students and teachers came together to share nutritious food throughout the observance.

This year's celebration was guided by the theme "Sa PPAN: Sama-sama sa Nutrisyong Sapat Para sa Lahat!" with the sub-theme "Nutrisyon at Kalikasan, Ating Pangalagaan!" Nutrition Month is observed every July across the Philippines under the National Nutrition Council, marking its 52nd year of observance in 2026. This year's theme shifts the national conversation beyond healthy eating to the environmental and agricultural systems that make nutritious food possible, reminding everyone that good nutrition and a healthy environment go hand in hand.

In line with this year's celebration, the school organized food-sharing activities designed to encourage healthier eating habits among the school community.

As part of the culminating activities, students brought an assortment of healthy and nutritious dishes to share with their classmates, turning the classroom into a venue for both learning and communal eating. A day before this, students also took part in a fruit-sharing activity, bringing an array of fresh fruits to enjoy together.

Not to be left out, the school's teachers and staff joined in the spirit of the celebration through their own food-sharing activity, featuring boiled and steamed vegetables and fruits. The simple yet wholesome spread reflected the very message of the celebration, that good nutrition need not be complicated or costly.
The month-long observance aimed to instill among students and personnel alike the value of proper nutrition and healthy food choices, habits that health advocates say are essential in combating malnutrition and promoting overall wellness among the youth.

With the food-sharing activities serving as a fitting culmination, Joaquin Smith National High School's celebration of Nutrition Month emphasized not just the importance of eating right, but also the value of community, sustainability, and togetherness in building healthier habits.

Serving with Urgency:
Message to New SPTA and Faculty Club Officers

Newly inducted officers of the SPTA and Faculty Club of Joaquin Smith National High School (JSNHS) received a challenge to lead with urgency, humility, and heart during the induction ceremony held on July 29, 2026 at the JSNHS Science Building.

The guest speaker and inducting officer- Hon. Councilor Vladimir Cayabas (Baguio City Councilor) congratulated the incoming officers while reminding them that their term, though only one year with a possible extension, should be treated with the same seriousness as a full three-year mandate — a total of 1,095 days of service. He urged the newly inducted leaders to immediately sit down and draft a clear strategic plan, stressing that direction and urgency go hand in hand.

Councilor Cayabas emphasized continuity, encouraging the new officers to sustain the strong programs left behind by past leaders while still finding room to introduce fresh ideas. He reminded them not to let good ideas slip away once inspiration strikes, but to capture and institutionalize them so they outlast a single term.

A central theme of the speech was the role of the SPTA as a genuine partner of the school and the Department of Education — not merely a supporting body. The Councilor Cayabas pointed out that the ultimate goal is simple: helping students learn and thrive in a safe environment, a task no single stakeholder can accomplish alone.

Leadership means selling ideas, not seeking approval. Councilor Cayabas reminded the officers that leadership is not about pleasing everyone. Citing the principle that a leader who tries to please everyone ends up pleasing no one, he encouraged them to develop mental toughness and a positive mindset — recognizing that while they cannot control other people’s attitudes, they can always control their own response. He urged them to stay firm even when met with unsupportive remarks, as long as they remain aligned with the shared vision of the school and DepEd.

“It takes a village to raise a child” Closing his message, Councilor Cayabas reflected on the shared responsibility of raising and empowering the youth — teachers, parents, local officials, and religious groups alike — reinforcing that no single group, office, or sector can do it alone. He thanked the volunteers, teachers, and officers present, calling on everyone to continue working together to help the youth become life winners.
