Joaquin Smith National High School students had an informative Reproductive Health Orientation last Friday, March 14, 2025. Organized to educate Grade 8 and Grade 9 students on important health information, the activity was handled by professionals from Baguio Health Services Office's Population Division.

Speakers during the orientation were Ellen C. Gatilowan, Rolans Ace S. Rosas, Brenda T. Odangga, and Rowena B. Rabanes, who imparted important lessons on reproductive health, responsible choice-making, and the need for proper health education among adolescents.

The session entailed discussions of puberty, media literacy, teenage pregnancy, and effects of poverty. The interactive sessions enabled students to ask questions and rectify misconceptions regarding reproductive health.

"Such orientation is crucial in ensuring young people make informed decisions on their health and well-being. Educating them early will equip them to own their future," Brenda T. Odangga, a speaker, said.

Teachers and school administrators commended the initiative, citing the necessity of ongoing health education in schools. The meeting ended with an assurance of additional reproductive health awareness programs in the future.

Recently, the SPTA officers, headed by SPTA President Preciousa Patna-an, spearheaded a clean-up drive at Joaquin Smith National High School. The activity was supported by the school administration and stakeholders to promote cleanliness and set a good example for the community.

According to Preciousa Patna-an, the activity is aligned with a local barangay ordinance advocating for community cleanliness and underlines the school's commitment to being a role model for environmental stewardship.

"This activity is part of our mission to promote cleanliness in the school. We also want to show that Joaquin Smith National High School can be a model for cleanliness and discipline," Patna-an explained.

It was a clean-up drive of which involved the present and past SPTA officers, SSLG officers, parents, and other members of the community. The activity was initiated by School Principal Jesusa R. Yadao, who proposed the idea to the SPTA officers for immediate implementation.

Principal Yadao praised the participants for their commitment and encouraged the sustenance of such efforts. "This clean-up drive is a testament to the strong partnership between the school and the community. Together, we can create a better learning environment for our students," she said.

The SPTA announced another clean-up drive in January, and planned to conduct a similar activity on a regular quarterly basis. Preciousa Patna-an also encouraged all the parents and the school stakeholders to be pro-active in the future attempts.
"We are inviting people to join us in doing this. We can achieve cleanliness and orderliness together in our school, which then benefits everyone, especially the students," Patna-an said.

A clean-up drive also represented a collective demonstration by the school but also reinforcing its call for environmental responsibility, inspiring students and members of this community.
