Date: September 28 –29, 1637

St. Lorenzo Ruiz’s story is one of courage, faith, and sacrifice. A devoted husband, father, and church clerk from Binondo, Manila, Lorenzo fled the Philippines after being falsely accused of murder and joined Dominican missionaries traveling to Japan. There, he was arrested and subjected to severe torture for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. Despite unimaginable suffering, Lorenzo remained steadfast until his death, becoming a powerful symbol of unwavering faith and courage. His martyrdom later led to his beatification in 1981 and canonization in 1987, making him the first Filipino saint. His story continues to inspire Filipinos, particularly through his example of standing firm in one’s faith even in the face of persecution.

On September 18, 1891, Dr. JosΓ© Rizal’s second novel, El Filibusterismo, was published in Ghent, Belgium. As a sequel to Noli Me Tangere, it exposed the injustices, corruption, and oppression experienced by Filipinos under Spanish colonial rule. Its publication marked a significant moment in Philippine history as it awakened national consciousness and inspired the pursuit of social reform, justice, and freedom. Through the character of Simoun, Rizal highlighted the struggles of the Filipino people and the need for change, making the novel an enduring symbol of the fight for independence

September 8 is the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a cherished celebration commemorating the birth of Mary, the Mother of God and the mother of Jesus. One of the Church's most ancient feasts, that has been celebrated and invites the faithful to rejoice in Mary's birth as a sign of hope, peace, and the dawning of salvation. Christian tradition honors her as the woman chosen by God to play a unique role in His plan of salvation. As we celebrate September 8, we are reminded of Mary's profound faith, obedience, humility, trust, and her loving "yes" to God. May her example inspire us to become instruments of God's love and peace in the world and lead us closer to her son, Jesus Christ.
