Peace: Community Binder
By: Zion Grace Rosareal

Faced with an unfavorable outcome, Nur Misuari staged a violent tantrum. It was November 2011, the end term of Misuari’s governance in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao. By declaring freedom from the Philippine Republic, his loyal followers attacked army positions where countless died in weeks of fighting. More and more rebels join forces against the P-NOY administration involving civilians used as hostages to stop the AFP from intervening his plan. With innocent lives vanished every time a war starts, is the Government determined to resolve the conflicts between Mindanao against the whole country?

Fighting for freedom and for independence is what our heroes died for. But, fighting for freedom because of being discontented of what the Philippine management could give and also for the sake of doing whatever they want isn’t supposed to be. Countless lives were lost, countless properties were destroyed, countless livelihoods were damaged and countless places were ruined just because of the fight for Independency. Aren’t we all tired of this? Should we just act like it doesn’t matter and watch as those ignorant rebels take those pitiful lives?

As a country, we should always be one. If only understanding and consideration exist in each one of us, miserable events like the one in Mindanao won’t happen. If only trust and acceptance exist in everyone, then expect that no matter how different we are from them, we could always reach out to them and let peace bind us all together.

World Peace, World Cooperation
By: Trisha Zaldarriaga

People around the world ask for peace. We believe that in peace, there are no wars, no arguments, and no misunderstandings. We think that it can bring the countries to compromise. But what exactly is peace?

World peace is when the people won’t hide from the government anymore. When no stomach is left empty. When everyone will think for the better of everybody, not just themselves. When all we could think about are ways on how we could keep each other safe from a future of violence.

It seems impossible from our point of view now. One of the reasons why, is because of Syria’s possession of chemical weapons and how other countries see it as a threat to the lives of many. Most of us are familiar with the situation. Syria possesses chemical weapons. The world will not tolerate with chemical warfare. The US Navy have ships on standby, if Syria would not hand over the chemical weapons, they would strike. However, the US President Barack Obama handed the steering-wheel to Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president. Mr. Putin is championing a scheme to disarm Syria’s poison gas and nerve agents. Disarmament might work, but there will be a lot of complications in the process. Bashar Assad, the Syrian president, should agree to the eradication of his chemical weapons under Russian and UN supervision. That would stop him from launching another attack similar to the one on August 21st that killed almost 1500 people near Damascus.

Some say we seek the impossible. But everything is possible if we work together. Little by little, if we all think about it. If only there was no corruption, we could achieve what we call peace. World peace is the ideal of freedom and happiness among the people and the nations. It is the idea of non-violence, by which we all cooperate in achieving. We aren’t perfect, so are our nations. But peace isn’t about perfection. It is about the willingness to help each other in their downfall. Lastly, it is also the idea of living with each other in harmony.

Beyond the word Peace: Solutions for our Nation
By Joevanie Cañete Jr.

The similarity between heaven and peace is that both are actually states in life. Just as the former is not a mere place, being peaceful too is not just a modifier.

The US threat to Syria for alleged possession and killing of thousands of Syrians using chemical weapons menaced not only the Syrian government but also World Peace. And recently, the fiasco for ceasefire between our government and the MNLF jeopardizes above all the lives of our fellow Filipino hostages.

What is really peace? How can we achieve it?

Peace is not resorting to violence. It is a state of tranquility and serenity in one’s soul. Like the moon that shines which makes us all feel secure at night. And because it is the very opposite of violence, it is achieved through negotiations or diplomacy.

Peace always goes with “bi”. Both sides decide for a standoff or for an agreement. It is not initiated by one side only. Just like in matters of peace talks, it is important to have a consensus. This means peace is a state of harmony which is comprised by “peaceful elements” that blend with each other until to produce the best melody.

Above all, peace is a state of grace. It is bestowed by God to men along with the other fruits of the Holy Spirit. If it is from God, it is anchored to God. And if we hold strong to Him, there’s no violence, terror, or hostility only LOVE.

The US-Russia talks now pacified the heat between US and Syria. They reached a consensus to let Syria hand over all the chemical weapons. Yet the MNLF and our government troops are still set to fire. Thousands are now affected. Let’s just hope both parties won’t forget what they are fighting for from the start-PEACE.

Rise of Android Technology

Android 4.4 Kitkat, the latest android operating system is to release on October.

By: Yrmin Claire Grande

Gingerbread, Honeycomb and Jellybean isn’t it tasty? Well, let’s tour to the world of delicious Android technology. Google confirmed the next generation Android version called 4.4 KitKat. Yes, you’ve read it correctly, KitKat as in the trademarked chocolate bar made by Nestle. This version will replace Android 4.3 Jellybean as the current Android version that lifted the old Android devices. Kitkat is the latest operating system that follows a long line of desert-based names which keeps the company’s long-standing tradition.

Google has referred “Key Lime Pie” as the latest Android name but the company decided to go after another name after thinking that there are few people who actually know the taste of Key lime pie. Late last year, someone suggested that the upcoming name of the version will be KitKat – favorite snack of most Android users and the company decided to keep in touch with the Nestle company and within 24 hours an agreement was made. The Google teamed up with Nestle to create 500 limited-edition Android shaped KitKat bars.

The company will push Android 4.4 on its Nexus line which is expected to be seen on Nexus 11 tablet. Hopefully by 2014 other Nexus gadget will receive the new firmware. On October 2013 is the said date of launching the operating system.

Modern Technology nowadays is totally rising up our modern world. Gadgets are part of our future. We already have the modern world but there are people who are still inventing and enhancing gadgets for our future – a successful future for me, for you and for all of us. A gadget will always be the most innovative thing a youth could have. But all of us have one thing to remember – use it for the better.

SK: Abolition or Reformation?

by: Kristine Marielle A. Garcia (filed under Editorial)

The phrase “Young and corrupt” may have an element of truth in it yet as equally truthful is Rizal’s tribute to the youth as the “the hope of the fatherland.”
The Abolition of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) has surfaced in the political horizon. This calls for the Sangguniang Kabataan as the training ground and breeding ground of such irrelevant political drama. Training ground in a way that it teaches the young on ways of raking the government funds and breeding ground for “political dynasties” where the young members protect the family’s political power through holding a high position in the government.
Known young political leaders namely Benigno “Bam” Aquino and Teofisto “TG” Guingona said that they would rather reform the S.K than abolish it.
The transformation of the youth programs and a better reinvention of the main purpose of the Sangguniang Kabataan and not the abolishment is the call of the hour.
Consequently, last July 23-28, thousands of young people all over the world gathered for the 28th World Youth Day. “Young people are the window through which the future enters the world,” the Pope said during the welcome ceremonies for him at Guanabara Palace on July 22.
Pope Francis spoke about aspirations of young people in search of truth and love. The pope said the present society should be able to provide the youth with help so they can develop their full potential and live their lives as Christians. He said society can help realize the potential of young people only if it knows how to give them space.
The present generation must show “how to create the material and spiritual conditions for their full development; how to give them a solid basis on which to build their lives; how to guarantee their safety and their education to be everything they can be; how to pass on to them lasting values that make life worth living; how to give them a transcendent horizon for their thirst for authentic happiness and their creativity for the good; how to give them the legacy of a world worthy of human life; and how to awaken in them their greatest potential as builders of their own destiny, sharing responsibility for the future of everyone,” Pope Francis said.
Added Pope Francis: “When we isolate the young, we do a great injustice: we remove their sense of belonging. The young belong—they belong to family, a homeland, a culture, a faith… they belong in this way, and we must not isolate them! But above all, we must not isolate them from the rest of society.”
Indeed, the SK is the window through which the future enters this country. So, the question goes back to you as a youth; would you Abolish or Reform the Sangguniang Kabataan?
