KinderFirst Learning and Development Center is an integrated preschool and special education center located at the heart of Bacolod City. We are offering a play-based and multi-sensory preschool program for learners from 2.0 to 6.0 years of age. We offer in-person Toddler, Nursery, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten, as well as one-on-one and inclusion classes for children with special needs. We also have a math enrichment and remedial program through SAM Singapore Math, a program imported from Singapore, and a Structured Literacy-based remedial reading program for beginning, emerging, and struggling readers. Our name, KinderFirst, is in line with our main tenet of always putting a childโ€™s best interests foremost in our decisions and actions. Our goal is to provide children in Negros Occidental the same excellent quality education and care as their counterparts in Manila and other major cities. Furthermore, KinderFirst LDC aims to maximize a childโ€™s innate potential, regardless of initial abilities. La Salle's partner schools in training future educators.

What an enriching way to start September! โ˜บ๏ธ

The first week of the month was filled with learning, reflection, and opportunities to grow as educators. ๐Ÿ“๐ŸŒฑ

Our team and interns had the privilege of learning from our long-time Special Education Consultant, Dr. Julius โ€œTeacher Jaybeeโ€ Bernal, Jr., as we revisited and reflected on our teaching practices and how we can better support our learners.

Our Head of School, Teacher Caress, and SpEd Team Leader, Teacher Kim, also attended the Philippine Society of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatriciansโ€™ Regional Conference, which highlighted current best practices in inclusion, as well as the growing impact of AI on life and learning, and how we can harness it meaningfully in education.

To cap off the week, Teacher Jaybee delivered a sobering yet insightful talk for our school parents and team members on screen dependence and its effects on childrenโ€™s physical, socio-emotional, and mental well-being, along with practical ways adults can help children develop healthier relationships with technology.

We are deeply grateful for these opportunities to keep learning, keep reflecting, and keep raising the barโ€ฆ because the better we understand children and how they learn, the better we can serve them and their families๐Ÿ’™

Hereโ€™s to continuous learning and growing together!

"ANGER ENDS. It is a passing emotion. You can feel it. You can cry. You can kick and scream. But you cannot hurt because when the anger goes away, the hurt and damage may not."

There is so much to unpack about all the school violence, attacks & shootings that have begun in our country. So many topics that can stem from this.

1) How do we talk to our children about whatโ€™s going on?
2) Gun access
3) Children unable to healthily deal with their anger
4) Raising entitled kids who think they can do what they want
5) Keeping our children safe online and out in the world.
6) Parents who are not emotionally present, keep boundaries, and donโ€™t let their children experience difficulty, failure, and consequences.
7) Parenting during this phone-based childhood where our children are constantly online but gravely disconnected to the world

What has been happening stems from years of how a child is raised and what theyโ€™re exposed to with so many factors involved that it is impossible to pinpoint just one reason and find someone to blame. Itโ€™s literally a child experiencing people failing them over and over and over again that the result is literally death.

And so with the recent news and how overwhelming this is to absorb for young children and how complex a situation it is, we highlighted only two things while we slowly talk to them about everything else.

For our children:

1) Be kind. Be kind to the classmate who failed a test, who has no one to hang out with at lunch, who got her period in class and has a stain on her clothes. Be kind to the one who acts a little bit aloof, who struggles to connect, who is either loud and angry or quiet and broody in class. Be kind to the one who was bullied by others- do not add but equally do not ignore. Speak up or call for help.

This kindness may save your child one day. If that child does decide to wreak havoc in school, the child might remember how your kindness helped him/her just a little bit and spare you from whatever violence s/he feels like inflicting upon others.

This kindness may save that other child one day. When s/he thinks that he has no friends, no one to turn to, and no safe space in school, acts of kindness towards him will literally be life changing and help them get through whatever difficulties theyโ€™re going through.

2) Remember: ANGER ENDS. It is a passing emotion. You can feel it. You can cry. You can kick and scream. But you cannot hurt because when the anger goes away, the hurt and damage may not. So we sit and stew and deal with our anger. We find healthy ways to cope. We ask for help, go for walks, talk it out, scream into a pillow. When the anger dissolves and the head is clear, then we can find solutions to our problems and figure everything out safely (and sanely)

For the children who resorted to violence and decided this was their only choice, it took a hundred steps, cracks, and failures for them to reach that point. So goes the same for us now raising our children in this complex world. It will be a hundred intentional steps, difficult parenting choices, and conversations to ensure we raise them well and also keep them safe.

Power words ๐Ÿ’ช

โ€œWhat words should we work on first?!โ€๐Ÿง

*Disclaimer: This may differ for our neurodivergent clientsโค๏ธ

This is a question I get all the time, especially when working with my clients and families.

The truth isโ€ฆfunctional and meaningful vocabulary is the most important to work on!

The politeness markers, colors, shapes, etc. can wait.
