The SSLATE Graduating Students Retreat Formation, held on April 20โ21 at Don Bosco Retreat House, marked a meaningful milestone in the academic and spiritual journey of the 4th year students. This sacred gathering provided an opportunity for reflection, renewal, and personal growth, allowing participants to step away from their daily routines and reconnect with their faith, values, and purpose.
Through moments of silence, prayer, and shared experiences, the students were reminded of the importance of gratitude, humility, and perseverance as they prepare to face the responsibilities and challenges ahead. The retreat not only strengthened their relationship with God but also deepened the bonds within the batch, fostering unity, understanding, and mutual support.
As they move closer to the culmination of their academic endeavors, the lessons, insights, and inspiration gained from the retreat will serve as a guiding force in shaping them into individuals of integrity, compassion, and excellence. Indeed, the retreat formation will remain a cherished chapter in their journey as graduating students.

Returning to Serve: Thailand Interns Launch Literacy Drive at Luisa Medel National High School
Fresh from their three-month international teaching immersion in Thailand, four Teacher Education interns of La Consolacion College Bacolod (LCCB) stepped into a different kind of classroom challengeโthis time, closer to home.
Jade Martin Gustilo, Alycone Somer Tan, Lory Gane Regala, and Ma. Christine Entapan led the first wave of SSLATEโs literacy intervention at Luisa Medel National High School, formally marking the beginning of a strengthened partnership between the two institutions.
The initiative forms part of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed between LCCBโs School of Sciences, Liberal Arts, and Teacher Education (SSLATE) and Luisa Medel NHS, an alliance rooted in a shared urgency to respond to the countryโs deepening literacy crisis.
The collaboration comes at a critical time. The final report of EDCOM 2, Turning Point, has warned of a โproficiency collapseโ in Philippine education, revealing a steep drop in student mastery across grade levels. With only 30.5% of Grade 3 learners meeting proficiency and a mere 0.40% of Grade 12 students achieving minimum standards, the call for sustained and collective intervention has become impossible to ignore.
For Luisa Medel NHS, the need is real and immediate.
โWe are currently implementing remediation programs serving around 30 to 40 students across different grade levels who are in dire need of literacy support,โ shared Ms. Leah Cansancio, Head Teacher III and Adopt-a-School Coordinator.
Answering this call, the SSLATE interns, still carrying the lessons of their Thailand experience stepped into two combined classes of learners from Grades 7 to 10 to facilitate literacy sessions in both English and Filipino.
Drawing from their exposure to diverse learning environments abroad, they employed interactive strategies, differentiated instruction, and patient mentorship, approaches sharpened during their Student Internship Abroad Program (SIAP) at Saint Joseph Nakae School in Thailand.
โThese SIAP interns see this as their way of giving back,โ explained Ms. Jean Erezo, Program Coordinator of Teacher Education and Practicum Adviser. โThe experience they received abroad was priceless, and this is their way of beginning to take on the challenge, to help advance Project ARAL and support the literacy goals of Luisa Medel National High School.โ
Inside the classroom, the intervention quickly became more than an academic exercise. Through guided reading, language reinforcement, and contextualized instruction, the interns translated their cross-cultural teaching insights into meaningful local impact.
For Lory Gane Regala, the moment carried a deeper realization:
โTeaching abroad showed us how powerful education can be when it is shared. Being here now reminds us that the real mission begins at home, where the need is greatest.โ
SSLATE Dean Dr. Janrae A. Sanicas underscored that the initiative is only the beginning of a larger commitment.
โThis is just the start. We want to take our part in changing the world, one day at a time. This is our contribution.โ
What began as an international internship has now come full circle.
The interns once crossed borders to teach in unfamiliar classrooms. Now, they cross communities to address a national concern. If EDCOM 2 signals a crisis, this collaboration signals commitment.
In the face of a proficiency collapse, four returning interns chose not to stand on the sidelines.
They picked up whiteboards, opened books, and began again, one learner, one lesson, one day at a time.
