Reinforcing its commitment to culturally responsive, research-informed, and transformative teacher education, the School of Sciences, Liberal Arts, and Teacher Education (SSLATE) of La Consolacion College Bacolod (LCCB) actively participates in the Research Initiatives in Teacher Education (RITE) Year 2 Project, a nationwide policy research funded by the Teacher Education Council (TEC) and managed by the University of Santo Tomas (UST).
The project, entitled ๐๐๐ข๐ง๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ " ๐๐ง๐๐ข๐ ๐๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐๐ฑ๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ณ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐จ๐ ๐ข๐๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ซ๐-๐๐๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ก๐๐ซ ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ข๐ง ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐๐ง๐๐จ: ๐ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ฒ-๐๐๐ฌ๐๐ ๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐๐ซ ๐๐๐ฉ๐ฎ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐๐๐ญ ๐๐จ. 11713," examines how Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) integrate Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS), local knowledge, contextualized pedagogy, localized pedagogy, and peace education into pre-service teacher education. The study seeks to generate policy recommendations that strengthen the implementation of the Excellence in Teacher Education Act (Republic Act No. 11713) while enhancing the preparation of future Filipino educators equipped to respond to the diverse realities of Philippine classrooms.
As one of the selected Teacher Education Institutions in the Visayas, La Consolacion College Bacolod participates in a series of Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) involving pre-service teachers, faculty members, and academic leaders. The discussions provide an avenue for stakeholders to share experiences, institutional practices, challenges, and recommendations that contribute to the formulation of responsive teacher education policies under the RITE Year 2 Project.
The first phase of the Focus Group Discussions takes place on July 28, 2026, with selected pre-service teacher respondents. Representing SSLATE are Wesley Marco T. Mallari, Joliemae C. Tupas, Alvemar T. Pantaleon, Irene Mae D. Paglumotan, and Rain heart L. Villaluna. The students are interviewed by Dr. PB Mendoza and Dr. Ismael Salarda, members of the research team, as they share their understanding of Indigenous Knowledge Systems, local knowledge, contextualized and localized pedagogies, and their experiences in integrating these concepts through coursework, field study, practice teaching, and community engagement. They also discuss the institutional support they receive, the challenges they encounter, and their recommendations for strengthening culturally responsive teacher education.
The second phase of the Focus Group Discussions takes place today, July 29, 2026, with academic administrators and faculty members. The sessions are facilitated by Dr. Charity Rose Pagara of Xavier University โ Ateneo de Cagayan, one of the project's research partners.
Representing LCC Bacolod during the morning session are Dr. Janrae A. Sanicas, Dean of SSLATE; Dr. Rosanne P. Jalbuena, Program Head for Psychology; Ms. Jean Erezo, Program Head for Teacher Education; Mr. Rejay Alvarado, Research Head and Chairperson of the Humanities and Social Sciences Area; and Mr. Dirk Ga, Chairperson of the PATHFIT Area. During the discussion, the panel shares SSLATE's institutional practices in implementing contextualized and culturally responsive teacher education. Among the highlights of the session are the insights shared by Mr. Rejay Alvarado, who emphasizes the need to integrate Indigenous Peoples' (IP) knowledge more intentionally across the teacher education curriculumโfrom course outcomes and syllabi to learning plans, instructional strategies, and authentic assessment. He notes that meaningful integration should move beyond merely mentioning Indigenous cultures and instead ensure that Indigenous perspectives become an integral part of the teaching-learning process.
