Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, also known as blood sugar. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), Diabetes Mellitus was reported as the fourth leading cause of death in the Philippines in 2020. This disease significantly contributes to severe damage to the eyes and nerves, leading to amputations, cardiovascular diseases, and kidney diseases within the country. According to the International Diabetes Federation, as of May 2020, the Philippines has a total of 3.9 million reported cases of diabetes. Shockingly, 1 out of 14 Filipino adults has been diagnosed with diabetes.

As we observe Diabetes Awareness Week, it is crucial to join forces in spreading awareness and prioritizing our health by adopting a healthy lifestyle. One of the primary steps is to maintain physical well-being by engaging in regular physical activities. Furthermore, reducing sugar intake, particularly in sodas, is essential. We should also strive to avoid consuming sweets and junk foods, which can negatively impact our overall health.

Lastly, it is advisable to reduce carbohydrate intake in our diet, as it plays a significant role in blood glucose regulation.
This Diabetes Awareness Week, let us band together to educate others about diabetes, its risks, and preventive actions. By implementing these steps, we can effectively combat this disease and promote healthier living in our communities.
