COLUMN | DRESS CODE DRAMA

From time to time, you might see me around campus wearing the wrong shirt, the wrong shoes, or without my ID. Sometimes it’s because I’m running late; other times, I just don’t feel like following the rules. But this isn’t about my reasons, and I know I’m not the only one.

For many students, wearing a uniform feels like a chore. We often see it as just another rule imposed on us—something that limits our style. Some argue that uniforms suppress individuality, making students feel like they are just part of a system instead of unique individuals. In a world that values self-expression, isn’t it important to be able to showcase our style?

Additionally, following the dress code can be challenging at times. The heat often tempts us to roll up our sleeves, and our favorite sneakers can feel much more comfortable than the required shoes. Besides, we learn more effectively when we feel comfortable in what we wear.

However, there’s a reason behind the dress code in schools. Uniforms create a sense of discipline, equality, and school pride. They eliminate the pressure of deciding what to wear each day and ensure that everyone, regardless of background, looks presentable and ready to learn.

Beyond that, uniforms prepare us for the real world. Many professions—such as doctors, police officers, and business workers—require a standard dress code. Learning to wear a uniform properly now teaches us responsibility and professionalism that we will carry into the future. It also reinforces the idea that when we dress appropriately, we put ourselves in the right mindset for the tasks ahead. Just like an athlete wears a jersey to represent their team, our school uniform represents our identity as students and members of a learning community.

At the end of the day, uniforms aren’t just about looking neat—they symbolize unity, discipline, and respect. If we take pride in our school, perhaps wearing the uniform properly isn’t such a bad thing after all.

I still find myself breaking the uniform rules occasionally. But maybe it’s time to change. Wearing a uniform is like wearing a suit of armor—it may not always be the most comfortable, but it prepares us for the challenges ahead. Something as simple as wearing our uniform correctly can show respect—not just for the school, but for ourselves too. #

COLUMN | PURPOSE OVER POWER

LEADERSHIP IS NOT A CROWN, SO WHY CHASE IT?

Some people believe that winning an election is the ultimate goal. Some say that they can only lead once they gain a position. But is leadership just about holding a title? Does a position automatically make someone capable, responsible, or deserving?

Throughout my years as a student, I have tackled various types of leadership. I’ve seen different leadership styles, worked with different kinds of leaders, and even had opportunities to step up. But I have to admit—instead of desiring to lead, I became consumed by the idea of the position. The idea of being called a “leader” seemed more important than the actual responsibility that came with it.

However, over the years of being thirsty for the title, I’ve come to the realization that hit me harder than any election result. Being a leader is not about the power you hold, but the change you create. It’s not about being on top, giving commands, or gaining recognition. Rather, it is about serving, inspiring, and making an impact, no matter how small. But if that’s the case, am I even worthy of this position? Are there others more deserving of my role? Leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room, nor is it about proving that I am the best choice. Why speak for the voiceless when you can empower them to speak for themselves? True leadership is about listening, understanding, and making sure that everyone’s voices are heard, even if they are not my own.

In SSLG, the real challenge begins after the election. Anyone can make promises, but only a true leader turns them into action. A leader must listen, take initiative, and stand firm in the face of challenges. It’s about making decisions not for personal benefit, but for the good of the student body.

So, if a title doesn’t define leadership, what does? Can someone still be a leader without an official position? The answer is yes. Leadership is about influence, action, and purpose. Some of the greatest changemakers in history led movements without any official authority— they led simply because they had a vision and the courage to act on it. And at the end of the day, a title means nothing without effort. Winning an election doesn’t make someone a leader, their actions do. Leadership is not about being served, but about serving others. So I ask myself, “Am I leading because of the title, or because of the difference I can make?” #
