The year was 2020. A beaming Grade 7 scholar stepped onto the campus of the Philippine Science High School-Central Visayas Campus in Cebu (PSHS-CVisC in Cebu) albeit online because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many who enter Pisay, he was bright and perhaps a little overwhelmed by the daunting road ahead. Fast forward to May 20, 2026, that same student, Daven L. Baes, stood proudly before his peers, graduating With Highest Honors at the apex of Batch Harinawa.

Yet, if you ask Daven whether he has always envisioned himself at the absolute top, he will answer you with genuine humility.

"Honestly, I did not fully expect to graduate top of my batch," Daven shares, recalling how a tie for the Top 2 spot in Grade 10 first hinted at what was possible. By Grade 11, a flawless 1.00 GWA proved that the summit was within reach, but for Daven, the goal was never aimed on chasing a rank. It was about the quiet, daily commitment to excellence. When the final announcement came, his overwhelming emotion wasn't triumph, but deep gratitude. "It was fulfilling to see that all the hard work, sacrifices, and difficult moments throughout six years in Pisay eventually paid off."

No Pisay scholar is an island, and Daven is quick to deflect the spotlight to the embracing community that sustained him. He dedicates this milestone first to God for the guidance through intense moments of pressure, and to his family, especially his parents whose solid trust kept him anchored.

Remarkably, some of his greatest inspirations were the very peers he shared the classrooms with. Rather than viewing Pisayโ€™s notoriously competitive environment as a battleground, Daven viewed his brilliant classmates as mirrors of inspiration.

"Each of them possessed strengths and qualities that I admired and learned from โ€” whether it was discipline, consistency, resilience, humility, or leadership," he notes. "Being surrounded by such capable people pushed me to improve myself continuously, not out of unhealthy competition, but because they showed me the kind of person and student I could strive to become."

To survive and thrive at Pisay, one must learn to navigate the rigorous STEM curriculum. Daven admits that his journey was dotted with heavy moments of self-doubt when exams, requirements, and responsibilities piled up like mountains.

"One thing Pisay teaches you very quickly is humility," Daven reflects. He learned to reframe those daunting moments by embracing the attitude that setbacks are simply part of the learning process. It is a refinement process he summarizes beautifully: "Pressure makes diamonds."

Remaining "human" amid the academic grind meant intentional boundaries. Outside the classroom, Daven was a teenager navigating life, enjoying organizational activities, and relaxing with friends. He protected his mental well-being by refusing the trap of constant comparison, thereby ensuring that academic success never came at the cost of camaraderie.

Now, as Batch Harinawa steps out into the world, Daven looks toward pursuing a future in medicine, driven by a desire to remain grounded and committed to service.

When asked what profound truth he wishes he could whisper to his younger, Grade 7 self just starting out in PSHS-CVisC in Cebu, his advice cuts straight to the heart of what a true Pisay education is about:

"I wish my younger self knew that being 'Number 1' does not automatically mean having everything figured out. Achievement can open opportunities, but it does not define a personโ€™s entire worth," Daven says. "Growth, character, and relationships matter just as much as academic success. In the end, the journey and the person you become throughout it are more important."

As Daven leaves the campus to find his niche and serve the nation, he leaves behind a legacy that proves the highest honor is not just what you achieve, but who you become along the way.

""...But it is not a secret that failure is a reality and is in fact a common occurrence in our lives. If you are not failing weekly in your wet lab experiments or in your computational analysis, perhaps you are not pushing hard enough?," challenged Dr. Cynthia P. Saloma, Dean of the College of Science of the University of the Philippines Diliman, in her Speech during the PSHS-CVisC in Cebu 15th Commencement Exercises held last May 20, 2026 in the Campus Gymnasium in Talaytay, Argao, Cebu.

Centered on the theme: โ€œEmpowered Minds, Transforming Tomorrowโ€ the event saw 88 members of the Class of 2026, Batch Harinawa, marching the stage to celebrate the culmination of their six-year journey in PSHS-CVisC in Cebu.
