NEWS | CEO Quebral orders ban of single-use plastics on campus

In a continuous effort to reduce the ecological footprint and promote environmental sustainability, the Office of the Campus Executive Officer has released a memorandum enforcing a campus-wide ban on single-use plastics.

Effective September 1, the use of single-use plastics, including but not limited to plastic containers, straws, coffee stirrers, soft drink and water bottles, and any packaging primarily made from plastic, will be prohibited on campus.

As a result, everyone on campus is advised to bring their own reusable water tumblers for daily use instead of plastic water bottles. College deans, security guards, and the Management Information Systems (MIS) Office will be monitoring and reporting violations.

Additionally, a grace period from August 19 (the start of classes) to August 31 will be provided to allow time for preparation for the ban.

Penalties will be imposed on those who fail to comply, with the first offense resulting in two (2) days of community service, the second offense resulting in three (3) days of community service, and the third offense resulting in five (5) to seven (7) days of community service. Subsequent violators will be subject to penalties under the Student Manual, RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management (ESWM) Act of 2000, and other applicable laws.

Engr. Quebral urges everyone to work together 'to decrease the environmental health risks associated with plastic pollution.'

This initiative supports the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12) by promoting sustainable consumption and production. The campus ban on single-use plastics is a key step in reducing waste and minimizing plastic pollution.
