BALUCUC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PAGPAPATALA NG MAG-AARAL AT SURVEY FORM S.Y. 2021-2022
Exactly.
Many people have kids with Sensory Processing Disorder and don't know there's a reason for their behaviors (and believe it or not, many adults have it and don't know... that was me a few years ago! 🤯)
So... here's a post explaining it a little bit.
***Note that SPD is complicated and can look different in every person who has it. This graphic shows some ways it can manifest... it is not exhaustive and it's important to note that many who have SPD exhibit a mix of responses from both sides.***

✨W-SITTING✨
This is a bit of a controversial topic, in my opinion. A lot of people feel REALLY strongly about it in one direction or another. So, what’s the deal with w-sitting? Is it good, bad or indifferent? Here’s my opinion!
W-sitting is just like it sounds: the feet are tucked behind and pointed away from the body! This position can be a common transitional position for babies/toddlers, and it isn’t necessarily a concern if they are able to easily move out of that position and use a variety of other sitting positions!
Unfortunately, prolonged w-sitting can lead to serious problems with core strength and can cause damage to the hip/knee joints:
+W-sitting creates a large base of support, meaning your core is basically turned off. The wide position of the legs is creating stability, so the tummy doesn’t have to do the work. This position also prevents weight shifting and decreases the ability to cross midline. All of these factors can lead to poor motor skills and coordination.
+This position puts a lot of excess pressure on the knees and can lead to in-toeing while standing or walking.
+If your baby/toddler ONLY sits in this position or sits this way more than 50% of the time, it could be a red flag for core weakness, low muscle tone or poor sitting balance.
+If you see your child sitting in w-sitting, encourage a new sitting position like criss-cross, legs out straight in front or side sitting. Pick a simple phrase like “feet in front” and use it consistently to redirect your child. You can gently reposition the legs to reinforce the verbal cue initially!
+If your child has difficulty sitting in other positions, it could be an indication of something else going on. It is worth mentioning to your pediatrician and/or seeking an evaluation from a PT!
