Congrats Teacher Carlmel Bernard Añoso Belda!

“𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙞 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙤’𝙩 𝙋𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙖”
Carlmel Bernard Añoso Belda

In Pati Pato’t Panabla, Carlmel Bernard Añoso Belda turns his gaze to the perennial crisis of our nation: power and the excesses it breeds. The exhibition, arriving in the wake of the massive protests of September 21, does not shy away from naming the figures who occupy the machinery of authority—government officials, the clergy, the capitalists. Arrayed in their thrones of influence, they are never alone; behind and around them lurk the ever-familiar silhouettes of the police and the military, weapons aimed outward or bodies crouched defensively, an image of force marshalled to secure privilege.

Rendered in the muted tones of sepia, the works conjure the feel of an old photograph, as though these scenes belong to a history we should have long outgrown yet find ourselves condemned to repeat. This choice is not mere nostalgia; rather, it points to the persistence of capitalism as the ground from which such abuses continually sprout.

Belda’s process, kutkutan—the act of scraping pigment off canvas to reveal whorls and eddies beneath—becomes not only a mark of the artist’s hand but also a metaphor for stripping away surfaces to disclose what lies hidden: the violent, orchestrated play of domination. The tactile textures insist that painting is not just reflection but action, a resistance embodied in the very labor of the work.

Throughout the exhibition, a motif recurs: the checkered floor, recalling the black-and-white grid of a chessboard. For Belda, power is precisely this—an elaborate game, where no one is naturally endowed with authority but must claim it, maneuver for it, enforce it through violence, through submission, through fear. And yet, within this recognition lies a radical possibility: if power is only a construct, then it can be withdrawn, overturned, dismantled. It endures only when people allow it to.

In Pati Pato’t Panabla, the spectacle of power is laid bare—its frailties exposed, its artifices undone. What remains is the urgent call to awaken, to resist, to imagine another way of being together beyond the endless cycle of control and subjugation.
