Got a new classroom toy and it’s a hit! everybody loves Bluey!

Two children engaged in cooperative play — practicing sharing, turn-taking, and building frustration tolerance when Bluey jumped unexpectedly. The moment even surprised the teacher, highlighting how simple, well-chosen toys can spark social-emotional development.

Facilitated play transforms social learning.

In a recent session, our students engaged in a supermarket role-play while a special education teacher guided the interaction through targeted questions, prompts, and modeling.
Rather than remaining in passive or parallel play, the children were encouraged to take turns, make requests, respond to peers, and engage in reciprocal conversation. These small instructional supports may look simple, but they create meaningful opportunities for communication, problem-solving, and social connection.
This is the power of intentional play: when adults scaffold interactions, everyday pretend play becomes a structured opportunity for measurable social-skill growth.

Giving children time to respond is a simple yet powerful strategy. In a recent interaction, slowing down and resisting the urge to interrupt allowed a child to imitate words like "wee" "put" "i wav" (i love) and to participate in counting — all through natural play. For clinicians and educators, this reinforces that play-based approaches and intentional pauses can yield authentic language gains.

How do you move from report notes to measurable progress? Parent coaching. By training caregivers on waiting skills and strategies for longer sitting, practitioners ensure consistent implementation across home and clinic — leading to more sustainable behavior change and better outcomes for children. This approach reduces caregiver stress and accelerates skill generalization.

Are you integrating parent coaching into your programs? What outcomes have you seen?

Want a simple, fun way to combine fine motor practice with phonics? 🎉 Today we used stickers to target fine motor skills while teaching digraphs — and the kids loved it! We switched up materials (foam stickers, glitter, paper) to keep it fresh and tactile. Try it: pick a digraph, give each student a sheet and a sticker set, and have them place stickers on words or pictures with that digraph.
