NEWS: EMC sophomores win 1st Place, Community Choice Award in Core World Building Game Jam

Second year EMC students Michael Ryan David and Raul Bulana, Jr. were awarded first place for their map "Deimos: Titan's Grave" in DV Plays' Core World Building Game Jam last January 21. The map also won the Community Choice Award after garnering the most votes among DV Plays Discord community members.

DV Plays' second Core Game Jam focuses on the creation of original world and level design in Core Games powered by Unreal Engine. Prizes ranged from $50-$1,000 Amazon gift cards sponsored by Manticore.

The Game Jam opened submissions last December 17, 2020 to January 15, 2021. David and Bulana, Jr., under the name VitoSR, competed against 12 participants internationally. The top 5 winners were announced via Youtube video.

David and Bulana, Jr.'s "Deimos: Titan's Grave" fantasy exploration map wowed the judges and members with its concept, details, and visual and lighting effects.

"Everything about this map really sets it apart from the others," said DV Plays as they explored the map in the announcement video. "And honestly, hands down across all judges, this one was the clear winner."

πŸ“Œ Why do you make art? β€”
I make art kase I want to express my emotions, whenever I cant in words. Ito din yung way ko, if sto ko makita yung imagination ko na maging reality. Like, i have these moments na, I just want to draw outta nowhere, and it makes me feel comfortable and secured/safe that whatever I am feeling, is valid.

πŸ“Œ Art Story β€”
I started na magdraw when I was 10. Pakopya kopya lang ako ng mga disney characters non. Then, i started to like, doing flipbooks, and paintings. Kasi requirement namen nung grade 5 HAHA. Then, may mga poster making competition na ganon, kinocompare ko pa yung works ko sa iba, kase i feel like, I cant make a great art, but eventually, I realized, I dont need to compare my artworks sa iba, kasi this is how I express myself, and I dont need to pressure myself na kelangan ganito ka kagaling, or dapat ganito output ko ganon. I just needed to appreciate my own works, and everything will follow.

πŸ“Œ Why do you make art? β€”
It's heartwarming to see extreme love and passion inspire artists to express their thoughts and feelings by creating. The creation's purpose and meanings, both objective and subjective interpretations, can then inspire others to create as well. I think that this communication is beautiful and complex, which makes art a relieving and influential medium for a soul and the world.

πŸ“Œ Art Story β€”
Art projects in school are my earliest exposures to arts and design. I remember frequently admiring the papers we colored posted on our classroom's wall in preschool. In elementary school, I also remember the notebook page quarter markers that we were required to fold and design, and mine had glitters, perfumed pens, and heavy-handed hearts and flowers drawn on them. Soon, I actively participated in props-making and backdrop painting for our school presentations. I also involved myself in photography and photojournalism. By the end of elementary school, I started exploring digital arts and design. Since high school, I learned more about them and designed for student publications and organizations.

I have involved myself in many years and experiences of arts and design but I still feel like a beginner; I have not mastered a medium to my satisfaction nor settled on a distinctive art style, but I realize now that that's okay! When art is much too complex and subjective, I think that any progress in creation in any medium is an exploration of art. Then, after years of arts and design in that perspective, I understand that art is curious, wonderful, and fascinating!

πŸ“Œ Why do you make art? β€”
I make art to make content of media that makes me happy. I want to satisfy my imaginations by illustrating them, whether it be personal art or fanart.

πŸ“Œ Art Story β€”
My father influenced me a lot as a child growing up. Video games aside, he was the one that inspired me to draw. Seeing his drawings from when he was nineteen inspired me a lot, he could draw mecha, anime, realism, and a lot more art styles. Even at his age, I currently can't catch up to his level, but I owe a lot to him for encouraging my creativity. My mother would then give me a digital tablet and I would then make friends online and draw more with them, improving my art styles and meeting more people along the way. Even though I enjoy other mediums, digital art is what stuck most to me, so I focused on that. Now, I have a lot of artist friends that encourage me with my career and am now working as an artist for Merryweathery, a webtoon author that has made a lot of comics that make people laugh. I want to keep improving and making people happier with my art.

πŸ“Œ Why do you make art? β€”
I make art because it simply satisfies my inner being, it helps me to convey my emotions and express my feelings.

πŸ“Œ Art Story β€”
I began making art at my very young age. My parents saw my potentials so they just kept on supporting me. Growing up I learned how to embrace this unique talent and started to appreciate more about art. I engaged myself on everything that will make me improve more. I joined a lot of competitions and taught my self from those experiences and to accept defeat. I was inspired by the works of my eldest brother, he is also an artist whom I look up to. Also, I'm a fan of surrealism works where I turned my imaginations into reality, it feels so satisfying to do such artwork as surrealism. It enables you to explore more and use your wide imagination. One thing I learned from my experience is that. Criticisms are the best way to improve yourself and to use those judgements to excel and for not to quit.

πŸ“Œ Why do you make art? β€”
I make art because I think it gets down to truly needing to create something. Even before up until this day, I love doing art so much. I make art because I enjoy it, it’s fun, challenging and absorbing too. It helps me a lot since doing art is not just about creativity, it's about the person you're becoming while you're creating.

πŸ“Œ Art Story β€”
Back into my childhood, I can see myself as someone who really loves doing art, just by simply turning materials into useful crafts, drawing, dancing and many other forms of it. These are just the things I am doing back then, but along the way, as I practice and have tried new medium, I found out at that I'm also good on the other aspects. This only shows that we must not limit ourselves with the things we only knew we are good at, because you wouldn't know that there's something in you, a certain skills or abilities that needs to be known. Indeed, art can help you to discover and understand things about yourself that you never recognized before.
