August was a brutal month for legacy gasoline cars in China. According to the latest retail data, pure electric vehicles locked down nine out of the top ten best-selling passenger car spots, leaving zero room for traditional internal combustion engines. The only none-pure electric to squeeze into the top tier was a split-option Fangcheng Bao Ti7 plug-in hybrid at 4th place.
Right at the front of this massive shift sat the Geely EX2—known domestically as the Xingyuan. Geely's subcompact hatchback took the crown as China's absolute best-selling vehicle for the month, moving 39,651 units. Built to go head-to-head with the BYD Seagull, the little EV isn't just a flash in the pan. The August surge pushed its year-to-date sales to 266,166 units, officially making the EX2 China's top-selling electric vehicle for the first eight months of the year, even ahead of heavyweights like the Tesla Model Y.
The rest of the top three showcases just how fast local buyers are abandoning gas. The Leapmotor A10 took second place with 30,652 deliveries, while the Tesla Model Y held third at 29,260. Overall, new energy vehicle (NEV) sales cracked the 1.005 million mark in August, pushing electric vehicle pe*******on to a record 65.2%. The highest-ranking pure gasoline car didn't even make the top ten—a clear sign that the old automotive guard is losing its grip on the world's largest car market.
