124TH PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE DAY “ARAW NG KASARINLAN/KALAYAAN” 🇵🇭

This day is one of the most significant events in Philippine history because it commemorated the nation's independence from Spanish rule on June 12, 1898.

As in colonial times, rebels will always exist. These rebels demand freedom from colonization because colonies affect their habits and traditions. Since the 17th century, Spanish colonizers have fought Filipino revolutionaries. Early Filipinos lost most battles. The Philippine revolution started in 1896. Andres Bonifacio, a Philippine hero, led a Katipunan insurrection. Members of "The Cry of Pugad Lawin" tore down their tax certificates, defying Spain. Luzon saw similar uprisings and Emilio Aguinaldo became one of the rebel leaders.

In 1897, though, Aguinaldo arranged a peace treaty with the Spanish. In exchange for financial compensation and the promise of reform in the Philippines, he agreed to be exiled to Hong Kong. During this period, the Philippine Revolution was nearing its conclusion.

The Spanish-American war broke out in April of 1898. The first action in the series was led by Commodore George Dewey of the American fleet, who won the Battle of Manila Bay against the Spaniards. Aguinaldo established plans with the United States to aid them in their struggle against Spain. In May 1898, he returned to the Philippines and liberalized cities south of Manila. Aguinaldo declared the independence of the Philippines on June 12, 1898. Aguinaldo subsequently became the first president of the Philippines after establishing democratic institutions and a government.

But, Spain and the United States were involved in separate negotiations. In the historic Treaty of Paris, Spain surrendered the Philippines to the United States for $20 million. Aguinaldo countered by initiating a rebellion against the United States.

The United States took over governance of the Philippines in 1902. The American-Philippine battle persisted. Furthermore, the Commonwealth of the Philippines was founded in 1935. The purpose of this was to prepare the Philippines for complete independence. On July 4, 1946, the Treaty of Manila was signed between the governments of the Philippines and the United States. This answers the question of when the Philippines achieved independence from the United States. From 1946 until 1961, Independence Day of the Philippines was observed on July 4. On May 12, 1962, President Macapagal issued Presidential Proclamation number 28, declaring June 12, 1962, as a unique national holiday. The Philippine Independence Day was moved from July 4 to June 12 by Republic Act No. 4166 in 1964.

Every human being should value freedom above all other things in their lives. No one has the right to take it away, and each of us is responsible for doing everything in our power to safeguard our community against acts of brutality and violence. Happy Independence Day, Philippines!
