DepEd Recognizes ACNHS Student Researcher for International Achievement
MAKATI CITY, July 13, 2026—The Department of Education (DepEd) Central Office, through the Bureau of Curriculum Development (BCD), honored members of the Philippine delegation who excelled in various international competitions during the Courtesy Call and Recognition of the Philippine Delegation to International Competitions held at the Bulwagan ng Karunungan, Techzone, Makati City.
The recognition gathered student achievers, research advisers, school heads, and education officials from across the country to celebrate the accomplishments of Filipino learners who demonstrated excellence on the global stage and brought honor to the Philippines through their outstanding performances in international academic competitions.
Among those recognized was Charly David T. Manuel of Alaminos City National High School (ACNHS), who earned the Patent and Trademark Office Society First Prize Award in the Physics and Astronomy category during the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair 2026, held from May 9 to 15, 2026 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.
Widely regarded as the world’s premier pre-collegiate science competition, Regeneron ISEF gathers the most outstanding secondary student researchers from around the globe to present innovative research that addresses real-world scientific challenges. Charly received international recognition for his research entitled “Serial Crystallography-Optimized Sample Preparation with MYELIn: Novel Homogeneous Protein Microcrystal Yield Density Control via Sequential Pulsed Electric Fields and Ultrasonic Irradiation,” a study that offers an innovative approach to improving protein microcrystal preparation for serial crystallography and contributes to advancing structural biology research.
One of the highlights of the program was Charly’s opportunity to speak before fellow delegates and DepEd officials. Having represented the Philippines at Regeneron ISEF for two consecutive years, he shared how competing on the international stage reshaped his perspective on research and strengthened his commitment to pursuing scientific excellence.
He recounted that interacting with young scientists from different countries allowed him to appreciate the diversity of ideas and approaches in solving global problems through science. The experience, he said, challenged him to think beyond textbooks and classrooms and inspired him to continuously improve as a researcher.
For Charly, participating in the world’s most prestigious science fair was more than an opportunity to compete—it became a defining moment that helped shape his future. Witnessing groundbreaking research and engaging with internationally acclaimed scientists reinforced his aspiration to become a scientist and dedicate his career to developing innovations that create meaningful impact on society.
He likewise expressed his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who became part of his journey. He acknowledged the guidance of his research adviser, the encouragement of his parents and teachers, the unwavering support of the school administration, and the opportunities provided by the Department of Education, the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation, and other partner institutions like the LGUs of Alaminos City and Mabini, Pangasinan. He emphasized that every achievement he received reflects the collective effort of people who continuously believed in his potential and invested in his growth as a young researcher.
Joining Charly during the recognition ceremony was his research adviser for two consecutive years, Kris Cristhopher C. Dela Cruz. Also present were Mr. Rey B. Pascua, School Principal of Alaminos City National High School, and Mr. Andrew R. Balecha, Academic Head of the Science Department.
Representing the Schools Division Office of Alaminos City were Dr. Ely S. Ubaldo, CESO V, Schools Division Superintendent; Dr. Orlando I. Guerrero, Chief of the Curriculum Implementation Division; and Dr. Cynthia B. Tablang, Education Program Supervisor in Science.
The delegation from DepEd Regional Office I was led by Dr. Rhoda T. Razon, CESO IV, Assistant Regional Director, together with Dr. Dinah C. Bonao, Chief Education Supervisor of the Curriculum and Learning Management Division; Dr. Jimmie C. Eslabra, Education Program Supervisor for Science; and Dr. Rica A. Perez, Education Program Supervisor for Mathematics.
In her closing message, DepEd Undersecretary for Learning Systems Dr. Carmela C. Oracion congratulated the Philippine delegates for exemplifying excellence, innovation, and resilience. She emphasized that the students’ accomplishments go beyond medals and trophies, reflecting the creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving competencies that define future-ready Filipino learners.
She also reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education by expanding opportunities for research, innovation, and international collaboration, ensuring that more Filipino learners will have the opportunity to showcase their talents on the global stage.
The recognition program underscored DepEd’s continuing commitment to nurturing globally competitive learners and highlighted the important role of educators, school leaders, families, and partner institutions in helping young Filipinos achieve excellence. As Charly David T. Manuel continues to inspire aspiring student researchers, his achievement serves as a reminder that with dedication, quality mentorship, and strong institutional support, Filipino learners can make significant contributions to the international scientific community while bringing pride and honor to the nation.
