AGOO, La Union โ Under the theme โMind-Upโ, GE faculty members lit their inner flames through a reflective conversation on mental health during the third and final phase of IGNITE at the Conference Room of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) New Building on April 24, 2026.

The resource speaker was no stranger to the room. Ms. Annabel Buendia, a registered psychometrician and fellow GE faculty member, led participants through a discussion on mental health awareness, stress management strategies, and what it truly means to be a mindful educator. Her dual identity as both practitioner and colleague gave the session an immediate warmth and rarely found in formal seminars.
Beyond the lecture, participants were invited to engage in meaningful self-assessment activities. One standout exercise had faculty members color a "Mental Health Tree", a reflective tool that allowed each teacher to visualize their emotional and psychological state. The activity was followed by an open sharing of personal experiences with stress and mental health, creating a rare space for vulnerability and solidarity among peers.

The Mind-Up session marks the conclusion of the IGNITE series, a structured, three-phase initiative designed to comprehensively equip GE faculty for the demands of modern education.
The program launched with a workshop on instruction and research, sharpening the academic core of the faculty. It progressed to a training-workshop on First Aid and CPR Basic Life Support, preparing educators to respond to physical emergencies. The final phase turned the lens inward โ addressing the mental and emotional well-being of the teachers themselves.
The progression was deliberate: sharpen the mind, protect the body, nurture the spirit.

The IGNITE program was spearheaded by Department Chair Melody Pacis-Tumanan, whose commitment to holistic faculty development anchored all three phases of the initiative.
โThe IGNITE program of the General Education Department, DMMMSU-SLUC, stands as a testament to the belief that great teaching begins long before a teacher walks into the classroom,โ Chair Tumanan stated.
Under her leadership, the department moved beyond conventional professional development to address faculty needs across intellectual, physical, and psychological dimensions.

As the seminar ended, the mood among participants was notably uplifted. Faculty expressed a renewed and positive outlook toward the coming semester, carrying with them not just new knowledge, but a refreshed sense of purpose and self-awareness.
For these teachers, Mind-Up was more than a seminar โ it was a reminder that caring for oneself is not a luxury, but a prerequisite for caring for others.

The College of Arts and Sciences proudly recognizes the outstanding winners of the Music Video Competition under the theme โFaces of Strength,โ one of the highlight events of CASama in Celebrating Gender Equality and Inclusive Society held from March 3โ31, 2026. Spearheaded by the General Education Department, the initiative showcased studentsโ creativity and advocacy through powerful audio-visual storytelling inspired by Musika ng Kababaihan.
First Place was awarded to the music video โFaces of Women,โ which compellingly portrayed the diverse roles and identities of women in society. Through a lyrics-based interpretation, BAEL students creatively blended performance, symbolic representations such as Brilyante ng Lupa, and cultural references from traditional to modern times. The production highlighted unity, empowerment, and transformation, ending with a powerful message that women are โginto,โ worthy of recognition and respect.
Second Place honored a concept centered on the idea that every woman is โgintoโโvaluable and resilient. The narrative traced a womanโs journey from a restricted past during the Spanish colonial period to an empowered present. By integrating real-life roles across sectors and aligning them with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the video emphasized inclusivity, shared responsibility, and the evolving role of women in nation-building.
Third Place recognized โCAS Womenโs Month Celebration: Faces of Women,โ an insightful and socially grounded piece highlighting pressing issues such as violence, inequality, and poverty. Through symbolic storytelling, historical context, and community participation, the video underscored womenโs resilience and the importance of collective action. The inclusion of notable Filipino women and generational symbols further reinforced the message of continuity, hope, and empowerment.
Through these inspiring entries, the competition successfully amplified voices, stories, and advocacies that celebrate womenโs strength, value, and contribution to society. The General Education Department commends all participants for their creativity and for championing gender equality through meaningful and impactful storytelling.

Faculty members from the General Education Department participated in a two-day training on basic life support (BLS) and standard first aid under the theme โREVIVE: Responding Effectively Through Vital Interventions and Emergency Preparednessโ on March 11 and 18 at the CCHAMS Amphitheater.
Dr. Salvatore P. Llavore, Campus Head of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Unit (DRRM), facilitated the sessions and shared his expertise as a certified first-aider.
During the BLS training, participants were equipped with basic knowledge, skills and attitude to perform basic life support techniques in times of emergencies.
The workshop soon followed, allowing participants to demonstrate the BLS Sequence and ensuring hands-on training in performing high quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
A week after, faculty members returned for a lecture on standard first aid training where they were taught about the different kinds of bandaging and responses to common emergencies in the campus.
Dr. Llavore initiated the steps for bandaging patients with laceration, sprain, and burns, and identified remedies for students encountering emergencies in the classroom set-up.
He also reminded the participants to complement their knowledge on BLS and standard first aid with mental fortitude to ensure that all the steps are properly undertaken.
REVIVE is part of the IGNITE capacity-building initiative aimed to assist GE faculty members in their multiple and support functions in the university.

Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University joins the entire nation in celebrating Womenโs Month 2026 under the national theme โWE for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society.โ This call for womenโs empowerment echoes across every campus, every college, and every classroom - a reminder that equality is not a destination but a daily practice.
Here at the South La Union Campus, this mandate is not merely observed, it is lived. DMMMSU-SLUC has long stood as a community where the voices of women in education, leadership, and service are not the exception but the standard. This month, that commitment found its fullest expression within the College of Arts and Sciences.
From the Dekana of the College, Dr. Raquel D. Quiambao, who embraced this yearโs local challenge to โLead like the Babaylansโ with intention and purpose โ CAS did not simply celebrate the image of the Babaylan as healer, visionary, and community pillar; it embodied it. Long before the festivities began, the women of CAS were already living the theme โ in classrooms, in department offices, and in the quiet, consistent work of shaping the next generation.
At the heart of this monthโs celebration was the General Education Department, championed by its anchor, Prof. Melody P. Tumanan, who spearheaded โCASama in Celebrating Gender Equality and Inclusive Societyโ โ a creative and curricular initiative that turned the Womenโs Month theme into a lived experience for every learner in the College.
Under the GE facultyโs direction, students did not sit passively through lectures. They created. They photographed. They filmed. Every Wednesday throughout March, faculty and students wore purple together, a visible, weekly declaration that this College stands for equality. The โFaces of Strengthโ Art Exhibit brought student voices to the forefront through original photography, while students from Readings in Philippine History and The Contemporary World produced music videos using official Musika ng Kababaihan songs, turning their lessons into social commentary on historical and global gender issues.
These were not extracurricular gestures. They were curricular, mentored, and deliberate, shaped by GE faculty who understand that education is itself an act of advocacy. In guiding students through the stories of Gabriela Silang, Teresa Magbanua, Gregoria de Jesus, and Melchora Aquino, they did not just teach history. They showed students where they come from, and what they are capable of.
The real legacy of Womenโs Month 2026 in CAS-GE is a culture quietly and persistently built by its faculty: one where purple is not a costume, but a conviction; one where a student sees herself not just as a learner, but as the next architect of change. The women of DMMMSU-SLUC CAS-GE have carried the spirit of the Babaylan long before this month began, and they will continue long after March ends.
