A school bag carries more than books; it carries the values packed at home.

When reports of incidents arise, physical security measures are often the first response used to safeguard student well-being. Schools deploy additional safety personnel, 24/7 surveillance systems, metal detectors, and mandatory bag checks at the front gates. While these safety measures aim to mitigate threats, they only address the visible symptoms that have already manifested in school. What if, instead, we examined their origin? A shooting event happened at Ateneo de Zamboanga where a grade 9 student wielded a pistol that was left inside his fatherโ€™s car. Leading to the incident, a grade 10 student was killed.

We often overlook that security cannot be primarily the school's responsibility to build; home is the first foundation of character, but schools and families share responsibility for maintaining student safety. Physical security should support, not replace, character formation and prevention. Real safety doesnโ€™t just begin at the school gate; it begins long before students arrive at schoolโ€”it begins at home, where the story first unfolds.

Before students enter the classroom to learn, cultivate knowledge, and prepare for the future, they must already carry a foundation built at home. Values like empathy, humility, and self-regulation must be taught at home, leaving the school to nurture what already exists. The family is a childโ€™s first teacher of values, manners, and character. A child is not born knowing the difference between right and wrong. These values are learned at home and carried into school. When a home normalizes and applauds violence, a child's perception will twist that this is right and never been wronged, can we truly blame them for echoing the only reality they have ever known?

If a schoolโ€™s true purpose is to nurture minds while surveillance merely records events, how can we expect institutional security to replace the moral foundation that must first be secured at home? When we rely on institutions in disciplining what is neglected at home, we shift onto schools, a responsibility that should be shared with families. Foundation is at home where it is packed and often carried going to school, and the role of the school is to build and develop what's been taught at home.

Securing the home does not mean installing surveillance systems or simply restricting their phones and banning them from social media access, it is about building good moral character, emotional and social support. A strong set of values is anchored by pillars of emotional safety, where they are heard, and seen. Guided with digital supervision, the internet and social media have become part of studentsโ€™ daily lives. By actively guiding them rather than dodging these platforms, active guidance builds trust and helps them learn without adopting harmful behaviors that were seen online. Lastly, conflict resolution where violence shouldnโ€™t be an option to resolve, through proper guidance can a child truly carry the sense of security at home.

A society that ignores the domestic environment only treats symptoms while the underlying problems remain. By addressing the root causes of harmful behavior, families, schools, and communities can better fulfill their roles. Secure the home with character, morality, and empathy; spare the school as a place to learn, cultivate knowledge, and prepare for the future. When families fulfill their role of instilling core values at home, physical security becomes a background precaution rather than an absolute solution, and thus, a school should be a safe place.

Secure your home, spare the school.

Heavy rain is inevitable. The damage it leaves behind does not have to be.

Every wet season, the same scene returns: flooded walkways, murky corridors, overflowing gutters, and students carefully picking their way through water that should have been drained away. We cannot stop the rain from falling, nor can we command the weather to be kinder. But we can decide how much worse its effects become.

A flood-free campus starts with proper waste management, accessible trash bins, well-maintained drainage, and facilities that make cleanliness easier. But good infrastructure can only do so much without responsible habits to match it. This is where Clean As You Go, or CLAYGO, comes in. CLAYGO means a shared respect for the classrooms, canteen, walkways, and other spaces we use every day. It sounds simple because it is. Throw away your trash. Keep your table clean. Pick up what you accidentally drop. Hold on to a wrapper until you find a bin instead of tossing it somewhere convenient. These are basic habits, but basic habits become important when hundreds of students practice them every single day.

The next time we see a piece of trash on the floor, we might think, โ€œIsa lang naman.โ€ But what happens when everyone thinks the same thing? One wrapper becomes dozens. Dozens become hundreds. And eventually, what seemed too small to matter becomes part of a problem everyone complains about.

We cannot control the rain, but we can control whether our own carelessness helps turn it into a bigger problem. Negligence may seem small at the moment, but when everyone contributes to it, the consequences can be impossible to ignore.

Ano pang hinihintay niyo? Ipabakuna na si chikiting!โœŠ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐ˆ๐ ๐๐‡๐Ž๐“๐Ž๐’ | On August 17, 2026, the faculty members of the College of Community Health and Allied Medical Sciences, alongside the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Class of 2026 graduates, gathered in faith to pray for guidance, wisdom, and success for the upcoming Philippine Nurse Licensure Examination on August 29-30.

Celebrated by Fr. Elmer Loreto, SVD, at DMMMSU Eriguel Hall, the holy mass was held both in person and online. Although the bad weather prevented the students from physically attending the Mass, it was also live streamed so they could still participate and attend online.

In these challenging times, with the threat of typhoon and the pressure of approaching examination, coming together in prayer offers strength and clarity.

To our future nurses, stay steadfast and hold your heads high. Your CCHAMS family is already so proud of you!

What began as a study locating tuberculosis hotspots in Agoo, La Union, paved the way for DMMMSU CCHAMS Bachelor of Science in Nursing students to be recognized at the 19th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week, gaining the Peopleโ€™s Choice Award in the research poster category, held from August 11 to 13, 2026, in SOCCSKSARGEN, South Cotabato.

Representing Region 1, the team, composed of Matthew O. Danao, Roe Ann Joy P. Aguilar, Diane Penelope B. Castillo, Jake P. Domalanta, Alexia Fatima Marie L. Gundran, Jasmine R. Ignacio, Ma. Fatima J. Quibote, Hendrix Eineken R. Reyes, and Maebel Rose O. Santillan, showcased their research poster entitled โ€œGeo-Mapping of Tuberculosis Hotspots in Agoo, La Union: Basis for Targeted Health Awareness and Disease Preventive Strategies.โ€

The study, using Geographic Information System (GIS) Technology, flagged certain areas in the municipality with unusual patterns as hotspots or coldspots, identifying tuberculosis (TB) incidence and determining possible factors contributing to the persistence of the disease in local communities. Afterward, the researchers conducted a survey among residents to assess their awareness, knowledge, and practices regarding tuberculosis, additionally carrying out health education activities in the hotspot communities, to promote TB prevention and control.

The research was previously recognized at the regional level after placing third in the R1HRDC Oral Research Competition last June 5, 2026, the said achievement may have contributed to the teamโ€™s selection to represent Region 1 in the national poster competition. Although the DMMMSU team did not advance to the Top 6 during the screening, preventing them from formally presenting their work during the competition proper, they continued to receive support from fellow students, faculty, and other members of the community, which resulted in them receiving the Peopleโ€™s Choice Award in the Student Category.

The research was conducted under the guidance of Salvador P. Llavore, PhD, RN, RM, LPT, SMRIN, and Sheryl M. Laron, RN, with Jonathan C. Clata, MAN, RN; Ron Christian D. Abenoja, RN; and Frances Anne R. Corpuz, MAN, RN, who served as members of the research panel.

Despite not advancing to the final round, the teamโ€™s Peopleโ€™s Choice Award marked a meaningful achievement for the researchers and their institution, as their work placed a local public health concern from Agoo on a national platform and demonstrated the potential of student-led research to contribute to tuberculosis prevention and community health.

May asul, may abo, may berde. Ngunit pinili naming isuot ang kuwelyong puti.

Pinili naming magkuskos. Kumayod.
