When Brina Kei Maxino was young, a psychologist told her parents that she might not finish grade school.

Brina proved that prediction wrong.

Born with Down syndrome, she completed preschool, grade school, and high school in regular schools—and graduated high school as class valedictorian.

She later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree major in History from CAP College Foundation. Before completing her college degree, she also finished a one-year course in General Clerical Skills and a two-year Associate in Arts program.

Her journey was shaped by hard work, family support, and the determination to keep learning despite the limits others placed on her.

Brina studied in regular schools, experienced bullying, and faced rejection from people who underestimated her ability. But she kept moving forward.

Today, she works as an assistant teacher, advocates for inclusive education, and serves as a Special Olympics Sargent Shriver International Global Messenger. She was also selected as a Special Olympics Global Youth Ambassador representing the Asia Pacific Region.

Brina’s story affirms that disability does not erase intelligence, potential, or ambition.

When learners are given support, access, respect, and opportunities to grow, they can define success on their own terms.
