𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐄-𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐎𝐫𝐛𝐢𝐭!😲🚀

The Western Philippines University (WPU), through the Research, Innovation, Development, and Extension (RIDE) Department, participated in the recently concluded PINAS Academe for Space Science and Technology Applications (SSTA) training organized by the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) on August 11–12, 2026 in Quezon City.

The 2-day training was attended by University Researcher and Extension Specialist Engr. Lutgardo Alcantara and Mr. Edgar Paalan of WPU-RIDE.

As part of the PhilSA Integrated Network for Space-Enabled Actions towards Sustainability (PINAS), the activity aims to strengthen collaboration among academic institutions and PhilSA and promote the use of space data and information to support evidence-based decisions, actions, and policies for sustainable socio-economic development.

The technical training focused on familiarizing participants with PhilSA’s current Space Science and Technology Applications (SSTA), Remote Sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) methodologies for environment, agriculture, land cover, and disaster management.

Through the PINAS Academe Network, WPU continues to strengthen its partnership with PhilSA and advance the use of space science and technology for research, innovation, and sustainable development in Palawan.

𝐏𝐔𝐁𝐋𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐋𝐄𝐑𝐓: 1st paper for Volume 18, Issue 2, December 2026 of The Palawan Scientist.

"Promoting stakeholder optimism about local development through science, technology, and innovation planning"

Science, technology, and innovation (STI) are essential to attaining sustainable development. However, utilizing any development platform requires proper planning. In the Philippines, there is limited guidance for systematically mainstreaming or integrating STI into local plans, making it difficult for local governments to effectively use STI for local development. This study employed a quantitative, exploratory, descriptive-correlational case study design to examine the Masbate Framework for STI Planning, which was implemented during a workshop for mainstreaming STI into the Comprehensive Development Plan of the Municipality of Mandaon, Province of Masbate. It applied futures thinking to formulate the development vision; problem and objective tree analysis to identify development issues, goals, and objectives; vision-reality gap analysis to determine development gaps and identifying the programs, projects, and activities that would address them; and project planning and prioritization. This study examines how workshop participants perceived the planning process and whether their satisfaction with the workshop stages was associated with their optimism about the outcomes of applying STI to development. Using post-workshop survey data and the chi-squared test, the study examines the association between participants’ workshop satisfaction and their optimism about STI-based development. Findings indicate that participants generally reported high optimism about STI and development. Significant associations were observed only for the stages involving the identification and prioritization of programs, projects, and activities. This study provides exploratory insights into how a structured STI planning workshop may help strengthen stakeholder confidence in STI-oriented development, while also pointing to the need for further testing in other local government contexts.

A new chapter in research, technology, and industrial innovation unfolds at Western Philippines University as the Metals and Engineering Innovation Center (MEIC) officially opens at the Aborlan Campus.
As part of RSTW 2026, the launch brought together government leaders, industry partners, researchers, and innovators united by a shared goal: strengthening Palawan’s capacity for metalworking, prototyping, engineering, and technology development.
More than a facility, MEIC-WPU is a platform for turning ideas into solutions—supporting local industries, advancing research capabilities, and creating technologies that respond to regional and national needs.

🌱 A Little Green Update from CoTLeC!

Remember the fruit trees we planted at the CoTLeC Center in Mangingisda last week? 👀🌳

Well… they are still alive! 🥹😂🙌
It may be small for now, but seeing it survive its first week is already a little win for us.

Here’s to watching it grow—hopefully into a healthy, fruit-bearing tree someday!
