Covid-19 anger

A WAR of words erupted yesterday between Health Minister Jelta Wong and Opposition Leader Belden Namah, on why there is a low Coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccination rate, and the lack of awareness.
It began when Wong warned “thugs” attacking and intimidating health workers conducting the Covid-19 vaccination that they would be arrested.
“In the face of the attempted intimidation and related failed attempts at unruly protests, respect must be shown for our health staff and they should not be harassed in their places of work where they are administering vaccines,” he said.
“I am issuing a very stern warning and notice to these thugs that police have zero tolerance for anyone who threatens or intimidates health workers.
“To anyone wishing to stir up trouble about vaccines, get accurate information from health authorities and make an informed decision. There is a lot of fake news circulating, and our people need to be on the lookout for people trying to mislead them.”
He then turned to the Opposition, telling them to “stop sitting on the fence and make a public declaration to condemn anti-vaccination troublemakers”.
“There should be no politics when it comes to keeping our people safe. (Now) the Opposition has the chance to try to be honest with our people instead of hiding from the issues that matter,” he said.
Namah responded by saying he was not the prime minister “to be in control of the continued attacks against health workers and vaccination stations across the country”.
“My message to the minister (Wong): I am sorry my friend, I am not the prime minister to be in control of the current situation,” he said.
“You and the prime minister are in government and you both should be speaking to the people.
“I had stated time and time again (at the start of the pandemic) that proper awareness needed to be done by the health workers around the country. However you all ignored my calls.
“Why do you think the people are reacting the way they are? It is because there was no proper awareness in the beginning.
“You cannot be using the police or the defence force (soldiers) to go around telling people to wear mask. A health worker must be responsible for that. Enough with the blame game. Do your job.
“Talk to the Pandemic Controller David Manning, and (with) the National Control Centre and Department of Health come up with a proper awareness.”
He said the awareness should be on the pros and cons of the vaccine and the Covid-19.
“People are listening to foreign scientists and physicians who keep telling them about the vaccine and the Covid-19. More awareness needs to be done,” Namah said.
