KILIMANJARO | DAY 7 — SUMMIT DAY!

The climb started around midnight from Barafu Camp at approx 4,670m. We made our way slowly by head torch towards the crater rim. It was very cold (around -10), the air was thin and it was a long, steady climb.

The first goal was Stella Point at around 5,756m, before continuing around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak - the highest point in Africa at 5,895m.

There was no rushing up there. Just one foot in front of the other and plenty of ‘pole pole.’

And reaching the summit isn’t the end of the day. From Uhuru Peak, we started a long descent towards Mweka Camp and some much thicker air.

A big day on Kilimanjaro and awesome achievement. ⛰️🇹🇿 Congrats to all the trekkers for making it to the top!

KILIMANJARO | DAY 6

Today we hiked from Karanga to Barafu Camp at around 4,670m - our final camp before the summit.

A shorter day on the trail, but there’s no rushing at this altitude.

The environment has completely changed. It’s rocky, exposed and cold, with very little vegetation remaining.

Once we reach camp, the focus is simple: eat, hydrate, organise our gear and get some rest.

Just before midnight, we’ll be up, lots of layers on and head torches ready, to begin the summit push.

Next stop - Uhuru Peak, 5,895m - the roof of Africa!

Driven by Adventure is heading back to Kili in September 2027 - If the mountain has been calling, this might be your sign!

KILIMANJARO | DAY 5

Today’s route took us from Barranco towards Karanga Camp at around 4,000m.

First up was the Barranco Wall with a steep section of scrambling - one of the more hands-on parts of the trek! From the top, we trekked through the valleys and rocky terrain towards Karanga.

We’re well into the acclimatisation process now. We continue to drop in altitude, giving the body a solid acclimatisation window and a break from the higher elevations. This is a good chance to rest, recover and start preparing for the summit push ahead.

Next up, Barafu Camp - our final camp before summit night!

KILIMANJARO | DAY 4

A big step up in altitude today as the route took us towards Lava Tower at around 4,600m.

As we’ve moved higher, the vegetation starts disappearing and the terrain became much more barren as we enter Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert.

Reaching Lava Tower is an important part of the acclimatisation process. At this altitude there’s a lot less oxygen available, so the pace stays slow and steady, giving our bodies time to adjust.

After reaching our highest point on the trek so far, we’ll descend towards Barranco to sleep lower for the night.

Climb high, sleep low. All part of preparing for what’s ahead!

KILIMANJARO | DAY 3

Today’s route took us further across the Shira Plateau.

The terrain became more open and rugged as we moved higher into Kilimanjaro’s moorland zone.

The Shira Plateau is actually the remains of an ancient volcano, and we walked across what was once its caldera (volcanic crater).

At this altitude, taking things slowly becomes even more important. It’s a steady pace, plenty of water, food and rest, giving our bodies time to adjust as we head higher.

Settling in at Moir Camp tonight - 4,160m!

KILIMANJARO | DAYS 1 & 2

We’re officially on Kilimanjaro.

Over the first two days we’ve made our way from Lemosho Gate, through the rainforest and up onto the Shira Plateau.

Day 1 took us through Kilimanjaro’s rainforest zone to our first camp at around 2,780m, with plenty of thick vegetation and a few black-and-white colobus monkeys along the way.

On Day 2, the landscape started to change as we left the rainforest behind and climbed into the heath and moorland zone, reaching Shira One Camp at around 3,500m.

From here, the focus is on moving slowly, staying hydrated and giving our bodies time to acclimatise as we head higher.

We’ll be hearing plenty of “pole pole” over the coming days - Swahili for slowly, slowly.

Next up, we continue across the Shira Plateau!
