Before 2027: We Must End Money Politics in PNG
As we approach the 2027 National Election, one truth is clear — money politics is destroying the heart of Papua New Guinea’s democracy. Too often, elections are not won by the best ideas or leadership, but by the biggest wallets. Candidates use cash handouts to buy votes, and once in Parliament, some leaders justify corruption by saying they are simply “recovering campaign expenses.”
If we want real change, we must act now with strong reforms:
Set Minimum Financial and Transparency Requirements for Candidates
Candidates should prove they have legitimate campaign funds before they contest. Bank accounts must be monitored during the election period to ensure money is not being used to bribe voters. This will reduce the excuse of “recovering costs” through misuse of public funds.
Raise the Standard for Who Can Run
Those seeking to become Members of Parliament must have a clean criminal record and reasonable educational qualifications. Leaders should be capable of making their own development plans and managing the people’s money, not relying heavily on consultants and political advisers.
Criminalize Both Vote-Buying and Vote-Selling
It’s not just the candidates — voters must also take responsibility. The law must punish anyone who offers money for votes and anyone who accepts it. Security at polling stations must be strengthened to catch and stop this practice immediately.
Money politics keeps us poor, divides communities, and makes leaders serve themselves instead of the people. If we are serious about building a stronger PNG, we must demand these reforms before 2027. Our vote should never be for sale — it should be for the future.
