UPNG CHEMISTRY STUDENTS BECOME "DREAMERS"
Six Chemistry students who are also members of the Clean Generation movement participated in The Voice Inc.'s signature program called the "DREAM" over the weekend. The DREAM is a self discovery program that helps one discover their purpose in life. The program was also a "train of trainers" program which means that the students were trained to be DREAM facilitators.
There were twenty-five UPNG Clean Gen members who took part in this program. Among these twenty-five students were the six Chemistry Students;
1. Beudon Kumi - 4th Year & CSA Vice President
2. Jayjay Kamraisol - 4th & CSA Task Force Coordinator
3. Beersheba Mou - 4th Year
4. Senas Wangipari - 4th Year
5. Leon Sailas - 3rd Year
6. Israel Naemon - 3rd Year
They were trained by a group of students and DREAM alumni, one of which was the CSA President, Nelson Kokoa.
"It was very productive yet surprisingly fun." - Israel Naemon
"My experience with the dream was amazing. I have dreams and a vision of who I want to be and what I want do but it all seemed unreal before I took this program. The DREAM taught me to keep believing and to pursue my goals in life with perseverance. I am so grateful to be part of this great movement and will continue to give my support in any way possible to bring this amazing program to young people." - Senas Wangipari
"The thing that got me amazed was that it was based on the word of God, as each segment was referenced to a Bible verse and then connected to real life. I count that another of millions of God's blessings upon my life!" - Jayjay Kamraisol
"I've attended a number of camps and workshops, safe to say; nothing beats the DREAM Program in terms of self discovery. I've never thought deeply of my purpose in life or how relationships with my peers and family influence my attitudes. Opening up and sharing our experiences only showed me that no two persons are the same. Each and every one of us have our own different personalities, and understanding this makes working with each other much easier. Life is a beautiful journey when one finds their purpose. Thank you, TVI, and thank you all CleanGen leaders and facilitators!" - Beersheba Mou
"The DREAM for me was like an eye opener, not to new things but rather to the things that i most often take for granted. I.e. relationships. The attitude session for me was the most striking one. I now realise that the outcome always depends on attitude, thus if you want a positive outcome you have to approach everything with a positive attitude. Doing the DREAM has given me a new perspective of my life thus a shift in certain way of doing things or more profoundly a new approach to life." - Beudon Kumi
Congratulations to our six students on successfully completing the DREAM program!

ALL FEMALE 4TH YEAR RESEARCH TEAM
Research Topic: Steam/Fire Wara - Ethanol Content in Hanua Bada Steam
As part of their final year project, a team of three female students - Melody Tarp, Susan Tawina and Hannah Paeke, researched on the ethanol content of the popular "fire wara" alcohol that is produced and sold in Hanua Bada.
WHAT WAS YOUR RESEARCH ABOUT?
"Our research was basically to test for the ethanol content of steam/fire wara. High alcohol percentage in alcohol beverages can cause damage to the human body, hence, our research. Due to time factor, we decided to purchase an already fermented steam on the shelves of Hanua Bada and test for the alcohol content. From what we were told, the already fermented steam was graded as A, B and C according to the separation and percentage composition. A grade had a higher alcohol percentage because it was separated first while C grade had a lower alcohol percentage because it was separated last. We took those three samples to test for the alcohol (ethanol) composition and to know how much harm in can cause on people who consume it.
In the process, we came up with the new distilled product of Whiskey. So we basically did two things in one research." - Melody Tarp
WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU ENCOUNTER WHILE DOING YOUR RESEARCH?
"Working in a group was a challenge for me beause in a group, when someone comes up with an idea or suggestion, the group has to agree. If there is a disagreement in the group, there's disharmony and members may not work along well. My group and I may have had disagreements along the way but we overcame all of them. My advice to those who choose to venture into research is that, when you work in a group, it is important to be neutral. Have an open mind, try as much as possible to stay positive and never give up." - Hannah Paeke
WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THIS EXPERIENCE?
"I have heard from fellow Chemists who have done training in industries and also Chemists in industries that researching is no easy task. It takes time, effort, costs money, enhance patience and determination. However, I personally have learnt two important things in this research:
1. When you work in a team, you have to know you're not the only one with ideas. You have group members who also have ideas for light to be shed on. Always keep an open mind about things and always be ready to learn.
2. Be patient. Great things don't just happen overnight. If it doesn't go as planned, think of other ways to get it done. Be logically determined to create a mental and physical researching environment for yourself because just as much as you cannot force chemistry to happen, you also cannot stop it when it does so." - Susan Tawina

UPNG CSA M***I DAY
The UPNG CSA hosted it's first bi-annual M***i Day today. It had the three classes - years 2, 3 and 4, come in different colors of Vanadiums oxidation states.
Second Years: Vanadium (III) - Green
Third Years: Vanadium (V) - Yellow
Fourth Years: Vanadium (IV) - Blue
The day started off with students attending the first morning lectures and ended with a Career Talk lead by the eight 2020 Industrial Trainees. The eight students shared their experiences and gave information about the requirements that are needed to do industrial training at different industries.
The UPNG CSA Executives would like to thank the organizing committee for pulling off another successful M***i Day and hope that the Chemistry students left today feeling motivated, inspired and amped up to take on the work force.

MEET OUR COMMITTEE COORDINATORS
• Full Name: Samantha Onopia
• Position: Elections Coordinator
• Age: 22
• Year of Study: 2
• What field of Chemistry would you like to enter after getting your degree?
This is only year 2. The field of chemistry is vast. I'll probably decide soon but I am leaning more towards Organic Chemistry.
• Why did you choose to major in Chemistry?
For me, science has always been fascinating. When I was streamed into block science in high school, chemistry was my favorite subject. I watched countless YouTube videos on experiments carried out at home using every day items and I've also carried out a few of those experiments myself and boy, were they AMAZING? I guess that developed my passion for chemistry. Also, every thing you see around you is Chemistry, it is the Central Science, so why study the other branches of Science when you can study the root?!
• What advice would you give to aspiring Chemists?
Pursusing a degree in Chemistry is tough and challenging but not unachievable. It requires determination, persistence, and consistency. Also, learn to have fun while you're at it. Chemistry is beautiful.
