Papua New Guinea has taken a major leap in digital connectivity, with the National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) confirming the nationwide activation of Starlink satellite broadband services.
In a public notice issued today, NICTA announced that the service developed by SpaceX officially went live at 8:00am, following the completion of all regulatory approvals and licensing requirements.
The authority emphasized that Starlink is now operating in full compliance with Papua New Guinea’s telecommunications laws and regulatory framework, ensuring that the rollout meets national standards for safety, fairness, and service quality.
The introduction of Starlink marks a significant milestone for the country’s digital development, particularly for rural and remote communities where traditional internet infrastructure has long been difficult and costly to establish.
NICTA said the service is expected to enhance access to reliable, high-speed internet across underserved regions, opening up new opportunities in education, business, healthcare, and government service delivery.
Industry observers say the move could help bridge the digital divide and accelerate economic participation in some of the country’s most isolated areas.
The regulator reiterated its commitment to ensuring all operators both new entrants and existing providers adhere to PNG’s legal and regulatory standards as the telecommunications sector continues to evolve.
The nationwide rollout signals a new chapter in connectivity for Papua New Guinea, with satellite technology poised to complement existing networks and extend internet access to communities previously beyond reach.
