Proposed NRL Team Name: SOMARE’S SONS of PNG (SONS)
I would like to participate in the naming competition for our nation’s new NRL team. I propose the name SOMARE’S SONS of PNG, abbreviated as SONS (Sons of Our Nation).
Why I chose SOMARE’S SONS of PNG:
1) National identity: The name is uniquely tied to Papua New Guinea, not linked to any other nation. Unlike many teams that use animal or foreign-inspired names, this choice highlights our country’s identity and heritage.
2) Leadership and legacy: SOMARE represents both traditional and modern leadership. The name serves as a constant reminder of our founding fathers’ legacies.
3) Unity and heritage: SONS signifies unity, togetherness, and the bonds among players from different provinces, united as “sons” of our great grand chief, Sir Michael T. Somare.
4) Historical context: Acknowledging our forefathers—examples from late Sir Kondom Angaundo and Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare—reinforces the sportsmanship and national pride that the team embodies.
5) Symbolism in the logo: The colors and stars echo our national flag, with the flag’s flare representing our identity.
6) Motivational effect: Wearing the name SOMARE’S SONS of PNG will inspire players to perform at their best, honoring our nation and our founding fathers’ hard work.
7) National memory: The name will remind every PNG citizen of our forefathers’ contributions. It will also inform international audiences about our history and values.
Acknowledgments:
I am grateful to the government committee that commissioned the statue of our founding father, Late Sir Michael T. Somare, in memory of his legacy. While not all citizens can visit the statue in the capital, this team name will resonate with everyone weekly on the field.
I would also like to acknowledge PMJM and the current government for their leadership, which makes it possible for PNG to be considered for a future NRL team. I believe the majority of support for this name will lead to its acceptance
