*Param Primary School — Milne Bay Province* Daga Local Level Government (LLG)
*Location & basics*
- *Where*: Located on the Owen Stanley Range, at the border between Milne Bay and Central Province. The school is under Milne Bay Province administration
- *Coordinates*: -9.97077° S, 149.48388° E
- *Nearby*: Right next to Param Airport.
*What it’s like*
1. *Remote/rural school*: It’s in the mountains on the provincial border, not near Alotau town. Access is likely by small plane to Param Airstrip (closed), or long walk/boat + track.
2. *Government school*: Part of Milne Bay Province’s education system.
*Climate around Param Primary School — Owen Stanley Range, Milne Bay*
Param Primary is in the mountains on the border of Milne Bay & Central Province. Elevation is roughly 800m–1200m, so it’s cooler and wetter than the coast.
*Main features*
**Feature** **What it’s like at Param**
**Type** Tropical montane climate — warm year-round, but cooler than Alotau
**Temperature** Day: 22°C–28°C. Night: 14°C–18°C. Rarely over 30°C or under 12°C
**Rainfall** Very high — 3,000mm to 5,000mm per year. It rains often, even in “dry” season
**Seasons** No winter/summer. Just “wet season” and “less wet season”
**Humidity** High all year — 80%–90%. Clothes take days to dry
*The 2 seasons*
1. *Wet season: Dec – Apr*
- Driven by northwest monsoon
- Heaviest rain, often daily in afternoon/evening
- Landslides can block tracks. Clou
2. *Drier season: May – Nov*
- Southeast trade winds
- Still rains 2–4 days per week, but less intense
- Mornings often clear, cloud builds by afternoon
*What it feels like day-to-day*
- *Mornings*: Cool, misty, clear. 16°C–20°C. Best time for outdoor work/school.
- *Afternoons*: Cloud builds up, 24°C–28°C. Rain likely 2pm–6pm. Heavy but short bursts.
- *Nights*: Cool 14°C–18°C. Need a blanket. Very little wind in valleys.
**Param area**
28°C–32°C day 3,000–5,000mm rain
Humid + hot Humid + cool
Dry season Jun–Oct Still gets rain Jun–Oct
*How climate affects school life*
1. *School access*: Teachers + supplies may be delayed at start of term.
2. *Track conditions*: Walking tracks become muddy/slippery. Kids may miss school in heavy rain weeks.
3. *Gardens*: Kaukau, taro, greens grow well year-round. Coffee also grows at this altitude.
4. *Buildings*: Must have good roofing + drainage. Bush material rots fast in constant damp.
5. *Health*: Malaria risk is lower than coast due to cool nights, but still present. Colds/coughs common in wet season.
*Summary*: Think “cloudy mountain rainforest” — never really hot, never really dry, always damp, and cool at night.
