In linguistics, false friends are words in different languages that look or sound similar, but differ significantly in meaning.
“¿Qué tal?” is often translated as “How are you?” In a nonsocial situation, however, such as when you’re asking for directions, checking into a hotel, and so forth, it’s just another way to greet and acknowledge someone and you don’t have to respond back, nor do they 👩🏫 It’s like that moment when you say “how’s it going?” in English but aren’t really expecting to hear how it’s going 🤓
If you don’t initially understand the question “¿De dónde eres?” a native speaker will often follow-up with the question “¿De que país?” or “¿De que país eres?” to qualify or help you to understand🤪
