For decades, researchers have found that strong cultural identity and participation in traditional practices are linked to better mental health outcomes in many Indigenous communities.

One of the best-known studies came in 1998, when psychologists Michael Chandler and Christopher Lalonde examined youth su***de across nearly 200 First Nations communities in British Columbia.

Instead of treating Indigenous youth as one population, they looked at communities individually.

They found enormous differences. Some communities experienced very high su***de rates, while others recorded none during the study period.

The strongest predictor was what the researchers called cultural continuity –whether communities had greater control over their own governance, education, health services, emergency services, land claims, and other institutions that helped preserve cultural identity. Later research also highlighted language retention and women's leadership.

Communities with more of these markers consistently had lower youth su***de rates, while communities with the fewest markers had the highest rates.

Researchers have also studied traditional Indigenous ceremonies as part of addiction recovery.

A 2023 systematic review published in *Psychiatric Services* identified studies examining practices such as sweat lodges, drumming, and talking circles. The review found that participants generally experienced improvements in substance use and related mental health outcomes, although the authors noted that larger, higher-quality studies are still needed.

Many Indigenous health programs already incorporate traditional healing practices alongside modern medicine because they can strengthen cultural identity, social connection, and recovery.

The research does not suggest that one sermon or one church determines health outcomes.

It does suggest that cultural traditions are far more than symbolic. For many Indigenous communities, they are closely connected to identity, resilience, and wellbeing.
